In their own words
Matecat
Matecat is a free, open-source online computer-assisted translation tool for translators, language service providers, companies, and enterprise teams. It uses translation memories and machine-translation matches to reduce the text translators need to translate, and offers adaptive machine translation from ModernMT in more than 200 languages. The tool supports document and website translation, glossary tools, and real-time teamwork: teams can assign jobs, discuss work in comments, and divide projects among translators. Matecat states that it supports 80 file formats, while the hosted service works with XLIFF out of the box and other formats may require Matecat Filters. REST APIs let users create projects and check their status; API credentials require contacting support with a use description. Its open-source server can be self-hosted. For hosted use, Matecat says browser-to-server communications use SSL, originals and translations are stored long term, and public segments may provide matches to others. It runs in a desktop browser, not on mobile devices. The listed plan is free, with unlimited features, users, and projects.
Trados
Trados is a translation platform for localization professionals, translators, language service providers and organizations managing multilingual content. It combines document translation, translation memory and glossary tools; Studio keeps approved terminology and recommends consistent wording across languages and scripts. Studio handles more than 50 file types. For browser work, Trados Go runs on any device without an installation, and users can select files from OneDrive, Dropbox, Box and Google Drive. The desktop editor is officially supported on Windows, not macOS. Studio licenses include up to 6 million characters of Language Weaver machine translation each year. AI Bridge connects to OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini and DeepSeek. Trados offers online resources and community support; direct technical support requires an active Support and Maintenance Agreement. There is no free plan, and a 14-day trial is listed. Trados Go costs £24 a month or £288 a year; Freelance costs £34 a month or £408 a year. Both price sets exclude VAT.
