Overview

Matomo combines event and ecommerce tracking with funnels, heatmaps, session recordings, A/B testing and flows. That breadth is useful when a team wants to connect measurement with analysis of visitor behaviour rather than rely on reporting alone. It also offers API access and more than 100 integrations, and says its data is unsampled.

Hosting is a meaningful choice: Cloud data is stored in Frankfurt, Germany, while self-hosted on-premise software is free forever. Matomo says both options provide full data ownership. It supports GDPR compliance, cookieless tracking and anonymisation, and holds ISO 27001:2022 certification. Raw data is retained for 24 months; report data is retained forever, a distinction worth considering if long-term access to underlying records matters.

Key features

Heatmaps and session recordings help teams examine visitor interactions; funnels and flows provide ways to study paths toward conversion. These tools make Matomo a plausible fit for teams that want behavioural analysis alongside event and ecommerce tracking. Their value depends on whether the applicable plan’s hit and user limits accommodate the people and traffic involved.

Administration includes user limits, access controls and audit logs, with SAML or LDAP options. Support ranges from community forums to email, chat and dedicated Customer Success. That range gives larger organisations a support path beyond forums, while the Community plan remains forum-supported.

Pricing

The free Community plan is the clearest choice for self-hosting: it is free forever, with unlimited users and hits and forum support. It avoids a Cloud subscription and its stated user and hit caps, but the trade-off is forum-level support.

Cloud offers a 21-day trial without requiring a credit card. Cloud plans can be billed monthly or annually, with two months free on annual billing; the annual starting price is €230/mo. The Team plan is 275.00 EUR per month, billed monthly, and allows up to 4 users and 5M hits/month with email support. It suits a small team within that traffic ceiling, but the four-seat cap can constrain wider collaboration.

Business has custom pricing and allows up to 20 users and 30M hits/month. Enterprise has custom pricing, up to 50 users and 100M hits/month, plus dedicated Customer Success and priority support. VIP has custom pricing and limits, with dedicated support and enhanced security services. These higher tiers suit organisations needing more capacity or support; the stated caps and enhanced services do not make them interchangeable with the uncapped Community plan. Cloud can scale to hundreds of millions of hits per month, though the plan limits still need to fit the intended use.

Platforms

Matomo is available as Cloud-hosted or self-hosted on-premise software, and its platform support includes API and self-hosted deployments. Cloud’s Frankfurt data location may matter to teams weighing where analytics data is stored; self-hosting is the alternative for organisations that want to run the software on-premise.

Who it's for

Matomo is strongest for teams that value data ownership, privacy controls and a choice of hosting, and want analytics features extending into session replay and heatmaps. The free Community plan is compelling for self-hosters comfortable with forum support. Teams seeking Cloud should check user and hit allowances against their actual needs, particularly before committing to a tier with a fixed cap.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free self-hosting forever with unlimited users and hits makes Community a substantial option for teams prepared to manage on-premise deployment.
Pros: Cloud and on-premise hosting, data ownership, cookieless tracking and anonymisation give privacy-conscious teams meaningful deployment and measurement choices.
Pros: Event and ecommerce tracking sit alongside funnels, heatmaps, recordings, A/B testing and flows, reducing the need to choose a reporting-only tool.
Cons: Team Cloud is capped at 4 users and 5M hits/month, so growing teams may need a higher tier.
Cons: Raw data retention is 24 months, even though report data is retained forever; teams needing longer raw-data history should account for that limit.
Cons: Community support is forum-based, while stronger support options belong to paid tiers.

Alternatives

For a different mix of pricing and measurement limits, consider Zoho Apptics, whose free tier includes one project, five applications per project, 5K errors/month and 25K engagements/month. PostHog is an alternative if an open-source product licensed under MIT is a priority. Visitor Analytics (TWIPLA) may suit a smaller free-tier use case, with 400 monthly page views, 20 monthly events, one conversion funnel and 25 session recordings.

OpenPanel offers a 5K-events-per-month plan for 2.50 USD per month. Amplitude is worth considering when a free allowance of 2M events/month and 10,000 monthly session replays fits the requirement. Heap has a free plan with 10,000 monthly sessions and six months of data history; Contentsquare has a free plan with 10k monthly sessions and seven months of data access. Mixpanel offers a free plan with unlimited seats, 1M events per month and 10K session replays per month.

Verdict

Choose Matomo if data ownership, privacy controls and the option of free self-hosting matter as much as analytics breadth. Its Community plan is particularly strong for self-hosters willing to rely on forum support, while Cloud gives teams a managed route with a trial and defined capacity tiers. Look elsewhere if the raw-data retention period or Cloud seat and hit limits do not fit your requirements.
