Overview

Touch Typer is a desktop tutor for people who want structured typing practice to translate into measurable progress. It is especially well suited to learners switching keyboard layouts and developers who want to practice code as well as prose. Its standout trade-off is a generous free starting point against a service that stores detailed typing data.

WPM and accuracy trends, per-key heatmaps, streaks, goals, and milestones synced across devices give learners several ways to spot weak keys and sustain a routine. You can begin without an account, but the privacy policy says the service stores account details, typing performance and keystroke data, streak and goal data, subscription details, PvP match data, push tokens, and diagnostic data. It describes HTTPS/TLS, database row-level security, restricted production access, and use of Supabase, Sentry, Fathom Analytics, Stripe, and Apple services. Users can request a data export by email or delete an account; account and typing data are deleted within 30 days after deletion, subject to legal retention requirements. That is a meaningful consideration for anyone who prefers practice data to remain local. Touch Typer is built by individual developer Robert Koch.

Key features

Layouts and code practice

Drills adapt to QWERTY, Dvorak, or Colemak, so the tutor can support both conventional practice and a layout transition. Code Mode covers TypeScript, Python, Rust, Go, and 40+ other languages, with syntax highlighting and indentation. Developers get practice with the punctuation and structure of code, not just ordinary text, though the broad language coverage does not change the app's focus on typing rather than programming instruction.

Feedback, duels, and coaching

Live 60-second duels report WPM, accuracy, and errors. Friends can join through a shareable link without an account, making competition an easy way to add a social goal without requiring everyone to sign up. Analytics and a leaderboard filterable by layout, language, and time window add context to progress, while goals, challenges, streaks, and milestones help make regular practice visible.

Premium's AI Coach uses the last 30 days of practice to create drills for weak keys and explain stalled progress. That makes the paid tier more useful to someone who wants guidance from their own practice history; the free plan still supplies core tests, stats, streaks, multiple layouts, and real-time PvP.

Pricing

Touch Typer has a free plan and a 7-day trial. Free is free and includes core typing tests, stats and streaks, multiple layouts, and real-time PvP. It is a substantial way to build a routine and compete, but it does not include the Premium AI Coach, custom drills, AI insights, or weekly streak freezes.

Premium costs 2.99 USD per month, or $2.39/mo billed yearly. It adds the AI Coach, custom drills, AI insights, and weekly streak freezes to everything in Free. The annual rate suits someone committed to ongoing practice who wants adaptive help; month-to-month costs more, while free remains the sensible choice for learners who do not need AI guidance. The 7-day trial gives a short opportunity to assess the paid features before choosing.

Platforms

Touch Typer runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Its desktop availability is a strength for learners who practice at a computer, but it is not the fit for someone seeking a mobile-first or web-based tutor.

Who it's for

Choose Touch Typer if you want progress tracking, practice across QWERTY, Dvorak, or Colemak, or code drills in the languages you type. It also suits people motivated by short live competitions or who want an AI coach to target persistent weak keys. Look elsewhere if avoiding storage of keystroke and performance data is a priority, or if you need a mobile or web platform.

Pros and cons

Useful free foundation: tests, stats, streaks, multiple layouts, and live PvP are included without payment.
Practice beyond prose: adaptive layouts and Code Mode make it relevant to layout learners and developers.
Specific progress signals: per-key heatmaps, trends, goals, and milestones help direct practice and keep it regular.
Paid coaching is the main upgrade: the AI Coach and custom drills are reserved for Premium, so learners who need that guidance must pay.
Typing data is part of the service: the policy describes storage of keystrokes and performance data, which may rule it out for privacy-conscious users.
Desktop-only reach: Linux, macOS, and Windows are supported, but mobile and web are not.

Typesy is a paid tutor with a free trial and support for Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. KeyBlaze has a free version, a trial, and macOS and Windows support. It is an alternative if you want a freemium tutor on those desktop platforms; additional lessons, professional exercises, and custom features require an upgrade.

Verdict

Touch Typer is a strong choice for desktop learners who want measurable practice across keyboard layouts, code drills, and live duels, with a free plan broad enough to start seriously. Premium is most compelling when targeted AI coaching is worth paying for. Choose another tutor if mobile or web access matters more, or if storing typing and keystroke data is a deal-breaker.
