In their own words

Mega Man Maker

Mega Man Maker is a free fan game for creating, sharing, and playing user-made Mega Man levels. Its Level Builder lets creators assemble two-dimensional stages and save them as .MMLV files. Build Online supports real-time collaboration over the internet. Before uploading a level to the online server, its creator must beat it; accounts can upload up to 420 levels. Players can browse, search, sort, download, like, and dislike uploaded levels, or play Wily Challenge mode. The builder has space for 1,000 screens in a 50-by-20 layout, though listed asset counts are marked outdated. Players can report levels, and moderators have tools to handle reports, including those about offensive or unbeatable levels. The game runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. It is a non-profit fan project unaffiliated with Capcom. The official homepage lists version 1.10.5.4, dated 24 August 2026.

QuArK

QuArK is a free editor for maps and, to a limited extent, models used with Quake-based or similar game engines. It imports, exports and converts sounds, textures and other assets, and can modify .pak and .pk3 files. Compiled BSP maps can be opened so their entities can be inspected and changed. Map-building features include duplicators and shape builders for structures such as stairs and arches; edits to an original duplicator’s texture update its copies. Documented output formats include Classic Quake, QuArK etp, Valve 220 and Brush Primitives. The project lists 3D preview through software, OpenGL, Direct3D and 3Dfx Glide, plus Python plugin support with more than 60 plugins bundled in the installer. QuArK Explorer gathers assets into a .QRK file and links files from earlier projects. Support listings mention 31 games in the FAQ and 41 games plus five generic engines on SourceForge. Windows binaries are available, while the Linux guide uses Wine.
