Overview

Nx connects project and task dependencies so it can run work in the right order and parallelize independent tasks where possible. That gives teams a way to coordinate builds across a monorepo rather than managing each task in isolation. Nx Core includes local caching, while Nx Cloud adds a shared remote cache and CI distribution.

Plugins extend Nx beyond task execution: they can infer tasks, generate or modify code, update dependencies and provide executors. Nx was founded in 2016 by former Googlers Jeff Cross and Victor Savkin.

Key features

Dependency-aware execution: Nx builds project and task graphs, orders tasks by dependency and runs independent tasks in parallel when possible. This is most relevant to repositories with interdependent projects; the feature set is less compelling if your work does not need coordinated monorepo tasks.
Local and remote caching: Nx Core caches locally. Nx Cloud shares a remote cache across a team and CI, avoiding a cache limited to one developer’s environment. The shared cache depends on Nx Cloud credits or paid usage.
Distributed CI: Nx Cloud distributes tasks across Nx Agents and packs them dynamically according to CPU and memory use. That is aimed at teams seeking to distribute CI work; its practical fit depends on the concurrency and credit costs in the Team plan.
Plugins and integrations: Nx documents support for Angular, React, Vue, Node.js, Java, .NET, Vite, Webpack, Rspack, Jest, Cypress and Playwright, among other tools. Plugins can infer tasks, generate and modify code, update dependencies and provide executors, making Nx useful beyond build orchestration alone.
CI and security: Nx provides workflow setup for GitHub, CircleCI, GitLab, Azure Pipelines, Jenkins and Bitbucket Pipelines. Nx Cloud describes trusted-branch cache writes, artifact traceability and automatic invalidation of artifacts made with revoked tokens. API communications are encrypted in transit, and task artifacts can be encrypted end to end before remote caching.

Pricing

Nx uses a freemium model, with a free trial and paid plans from $29/mo. The plans mainly differ in Cloud credits, contributor and CI connection charges, and support.

Plan	Price and terms	Included
Hobby	0.00 USD per free; free forever	50,000 credits reset monthly, 5 contributors, 10 concurrent CI connections and community support
Team	29.00 USD per month; $29/month	$29 included usage credit, then $5.50 per 10,000 additional credits, $19 per contributor and $2.25 per concurrent CI connection; email support
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Complete feature access, dedicated support and SLAs, isolated or self-hosted deployment, and SSO/SAML

Hobby suits individual developers and small teams exploring Nx Cloud, but its monthly credit cap has a sharp consequence: once credits run out, Cloud features switch off until the next reset. Team is the practical step up for teams that need ongoing Cloud use, but the included $29 credit is not a fixed all-in price; contributors, concurrent CI connections and extra credits can add charges. Enterprise is for organizations that need the full feature set, dedicated support or SLAs, or isolated or self-hosted deployment, at custom pricing.

Platforms

Nx supports Linux, macOS and Windows, as well as web and self-hosted environments. Its multi-platform support suits teams working across common desktop operating systems, with deployment options that also include self-hosting.

Who it's for

Choose Nx if you manage a JavaScript or TypeScript monorepo and want dependency-aware task execution, caching and plugin-based code generation in one system. Teams with CI workloads can add Nx Cloud for shared caching and distributed execution, provided they account for usage-based charges. Nx is a weaker fit for a small project that does not need monorepo coordination, or for a team that needs predictable Cloud costs without tracking credits, seats and CI connections.

Pros and cons

Pro: Dependency graphs order tasks and allow independent work to run in parallel, which suits multi-project repositories.
Pro: Plugins span task inference, code generation, migrations and a wide range of frameworks and build tools.
Pro: Nx Core includes local caching, with Nx Cloud offering shared caching and distributed CI when teams need them.
Con: Hobby Cloud features stop when the 50,000 monthly credits are exhausted, so it is not an unlimited free option for sustained CI use.
Con: Team’s $29 included usage credit sits alongside separate contributor and concurrent-connection charges, and extra credits cost more.
Con: The broad monorepo and plugin model is more than a project needs if it has no meaningful task dependencies to coordinate.

Alternatives

Choose Bazel if you want a free, open-source build and test tool from Google that runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. Gradle is another free, open-source build system, with Linux, macOS and Windows support plus an API platform. Choose Pants if a free build tool under the Apache License 2.0 suits your requirements.

Rush is a free, open-source JavaScript monorepo manager installable via npm, making it a focused alternative for JavaScript monorepos. Xmake is a free option if you need support across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows. Buck2 is a free build system from Meta, with Linux, macOS, self-hosted and Windows support.

Meson is a free, open-source build system for Linux, macOS and Windows. build2 is another free option supporting Linux, macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Nx is a strong choice for teams with JavaScript or TypeScript monorepos that need dependency-aware builds, extensible plugins and a path from local caching to shared, distributed CI. Its main reason to look elsewhere is cost uncertainty: Hobby Cloud stops at its monthly cap, while Team charges scale with credits, contributors and CI connections. If those limits suit your workload, Nx brings a wide set of monorepo capabilities under one build system.
