Overview

MES AI separates configuration from production execution. Its design-time client configures products, routes, dispositions, equipment, plugins, and master data; its runtime handles work in process, dispatching, inventory activity, shop-floor execution, and hold or disposition handling. Browser applications for ERP simulation, equipment simulation, and WIP access round out the suite. This division gives teams room to model their processes, but also puts the work of configuring the framework on them.

The ERP simulator exercises inbound planning, order release, and outbound reporting without a live ERP connection. That makes it useful for working through ERP-related flows before connecting production systems, though it is not itself a connection to a real ERP.

Key features

Plugins can add REST endpoints, event handlers, equipment behavior, dispatch strategies, and integration logic. This breadth is valuable when a plant's processes do not fit standard workflows; it also means the framework is most compelling to teams able to build and maintain custom behavior.

A versioned REST API and WebSocket event stream provide programmatic access and near-real-time updates. PostgreSQL is the default database, with SQL Server and Oracle also supported. Optional integration dependencies span OPC UA, MQTT, SAP, SQL Server, Oracle, Modbus, Redis, STOMP, and AVEVA historian integration work. The range supports varied environments, but some integrations require optional dependencies rather than coming as a single uniform setup.

Authentication and role-based access control apply across API and UI-backed workflows. The project describes server-side unit tests and end-to-end SQA coverage for key design-time and runtime workflows. Test drives of the MES applications require no authentication, offering a way to explore the applications before committing to deployment.

Pricing

The MES AI plan is free. It is free and open source, so it avoids a licence fee while giving teams a framework to tailor to their operations. That price is especially attractive for organizations with the technical capacity to configure, deploy, and extend the system; it does not remove the work of adapting it to a particular plant.

Platforms

MES AI runs on Linux, macOS, or Windows, with a FastAPI server and separate Vite client applications. Its applications are browser-based, and the deployment options include self-hosting. This suits teams that want control over where the system runs, rather than buyers seeking a narrowly hosted service.

Who it's for

MES AI is aimed at manufacturing teams that want to adapt execution workflows, integrations, and user experiences to their operations. Its work order management, quality management, lot and serial traceability, shop-floor data capture, real-time dashboards, and ERP integration capabilities cover a broad set of MES needs. The strongest fit is a team with the technical resources to configure the design-time environment and implement any plant-specific plugins or integrations. Organizations that want a turnkey workflow with minimal customization should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with plugins for extending endpoints, equipment behavior, dispatching, and integration logic.
Pros: Separate design-time, runtime, and simulator applications support configuration and workflow exercises without a live ERP connection.
Pros: PostgreSQL by default, plus SQL Server and Oracle support, and a versioned API with WebSocket events.
Cons: Tailoring workflows and integrations is central to the framework, so teams must be ready to do that work themselves.
Cons: Several integration options depend on optional components, which can add setup choices for teams seeking a straightforward deployment.

Alternatives

OpenMES is another free option, with a Community plan described as a full MES experience for single-site operations. It may suit a single-site buyer looking for a more defined community package; MES AI is the better fit when plugin-driven customization is the priority.

Verdict

Choose MES AI if your manufacturing team wants a free, open-source foundation and has the technical capacity to tailor its workflows and integrations. Its combination of execution applications and extensible plugins is the main reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a ready-to-use MES that does not depend on your team to shape the system around plant-specific needs.
