Overview

MetaPerson Creator is a browser tool for making customizable, full-body 3D avatars from selfies. It is best suited to creators and developers who need characters for games, apps or virtual spaces. Its strongest case is the combination of avatar customization and rigged exports; its main drawback is the cost of generating avatars beyond the free first one.

Key features

Customization and export

Users can make realistic or cartoon avatars, adjust facial features and body shape, and choose hairstyles, outfits and accessories. That makes the tool more adaptable than a one-step selfie conversion when a character needs to suit a project. Exports in GLB, glTF or FBX include a Humanoid rig and Mixamo-compatible animations, giving developers a useful starting point for compatible animation workflows.

Integration options

The creator can be embedded in a website with an iframe and JavaScript API. Documentation covers native iOS and Android integrations and a mobile creator implementation. Unity samples span Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, WebGL and VR; Unreal Engine has a sample project and marketplace plugin. Unity, Unreal Engine, VRChat and web apps are named as destinations for exported models. API access is available on Enterprise, so teams that need that route must budget for custom pricing.

Privacy and support

Uploaded images may be processed as personal data and are not shared with third parties unless the user specifically requests it. The maker describes access controls, confidentiality duties and procedures for suspected personal-data breaches. Support is available by email; Enterprise customers also get a dedicated Slack channel.

Pricing

Free and Pro

The free plan provides one avatar and its export. Further avatars require in-app credits, making it a practical way to produce a single character, but not an ongoing free-generation option. Pro costs $800.00 USD per month, billed at $800 /mo, with monthly and annual billing options. It includes 6 000 avatars per month, a custom data retention policy and integration into your application. After the quota, generation continues at $0,03 per additional avatar; that predictable per-avatar charge matters for high-volume projects.

Enterprise

Enterprise has custom pricing and includes everything in Pro, plus local or offline generation, REST API access, custom topology, blendshapes, hairstyles and outfits, and dedicated Slack support. It is the fit for teams needing those deployment or customization options, rather than a lower-cost substitute for Pro.

Platforms

The creator runs in a browser, and the platform coverage includes web, iOS, Android, macOS and Windows, alongside API. Unity samples also cover WebGL and VR. The range makes it relevant to projects that span mobile, desktop and browser deployment, though API access is an Enterprise feature.

Who it's for

MetaPerson Creator suits game and app developers, social-media creators, and teams building for virtual spaces or creative projects who want customizable, rigged avatars from selfies. It is less compelling for occasional users who need more than one avatar but cannot justify credits or a $800.00 USD monthly plan.

Pros and cons

Pro: Realistic and cartoon styles, adjustable features and clothing give creators control over a character's appearance.
Pro: GLB, glTF and FBX exports with a Humanoid rig and Mixamo-compatible animations are suited to downstream animation workflows.
Pro: Web embedding, mobile integration documentation and Unity and Unreal Engine resources cover several ways to bring avatar creation into a project.
Con: The free plan covers only the first avatar; additional generation requires credits.
Con: Pro starts at $800.00 USD per month, and generation beyond 6 000 avatars costs $0,03 each.
Con: REST API access is reserved for Enterprise, whose price is custom.

Alternatives

Choose Blockbench if a free tool for any type of project is a better fit than selfie-based avatar generation. Meshy is a freemium alternative with a Free plan of 100 credits and 10 free monthly downloads for Meshy 6 Lite models; its Pro plan costs 20.00 USD per month.

Blender is a free, open-source 3D creation suite for those who want a broader creation tool and do not need MetaPerson Creator's selfie-to-avatar workflow. in3D offers a free API-testing plan limited to 2 scans per day and a 100-scan option for 100.00 USD once, which may suit a smaller scan test.

3DCoat is another option, with a 3DCoat 2026 Individual Node-locked plan at 379.00 EUR per month and 12 months of free updates. Avatar SDK Avatar API is worth considering when the requirement is specifically an avatar API with local or offline generation; its Enterprise plan has custom pricing.

Avaturn is a freemium alternative whose PRO plan costs 800.00 USD per month and includes up to 1.000 avatars per month plus $0.15 per extra avatar. MakeHuman is a free option with no license fees, paywall or email requirement to download.

Verdict

Choose MetaPerson Creator if your project needs customizable, rigged selfie-derived avatars and a route into game engines, apps or virtual spaces. The free first export is a useful starting point, but sustained production is costly: Pro's monthly quota and per-avatar overage make the most sense when your project can use that volume. Look elsewhere if you need a few additional avatars without a recurring $800.00 USD monthly commitment, or if your priority is a general-purpose 3D tool rather than avatar generation.
