Overview

A pendulum animation, Italian tempo markings and natural reverb give True Metronome familiar visual and audio cues. It spans 20–400 BPM, with custom time signatures and subdivision control, while its frame-accurate audio engine is designed for steady timing. That breadth suits varied practice, though the free plan's daily Tap Tempo cap can interrupt a workflow built around repeated tempo checks.

Practice tracking organizes progress by day, week and month, making the app more useful for players maintaining a routine than a simple beat generator. Beat Detection uses the microphone to identify tempo from an audio source in real time. Microphone audio is processed on-device and is not recorded, stored or transmitted. The app collects limited pseudonymous analytics and does not sell personal information.

Key features

Tempo and meter: Set tempos from 20 to 400 BPM, tap to find a tempo, adjust subdivisions and use custom time signatures. Free users get up to five Tap Tempo uses per day; Pro removes that limit.
Practice tracking: Daily, weekly and monthly views make progress visible over time, a useful addition for students and teachers following a regular practice routine.
Beat Detection: The microphone-based tool detects tempo from audio in real time. On-device processing keeps that audio from being recorded, stored or transmitted.
Browser practice: The web version needs no download and works in modern browsers, with sample-accurate timing, tap tempo and a pendulum animation.
Practice environment: The teacher page says there are no ads during practice, and the free version requires no account.

Pricing

The free plan is free and includes the 20–400 BPM range, all backgrounds, two skins, all time signatures, one bell accent and background playback. It is a substantial starting point for standard metronome practice, but the five-per-day Tap Tempo allowance is a meaningful constraint for players who use it often.

The Special Skin costs 0.99 USD per once as an in-app purchase and buys one special skin. It is a cosmetic option rather than a route to additional practice tools.

True Metronome Pro costs 9.99 USD per once as a one-time in-app purchase. It adds 11 subdivision patterns, Tempo Trainer, live tempo detection, unlimited Tap Tempo, presets, Flash on Beat, all skins and bell accents, plus Siri, Apple Watch, widgets and Live Activities. This is the sensible choice for regular users who need those tools or want unrestricted tapping; occasional users can stay on Free. Apple App Store or Google Play handles in-app purchase transactions, and True Metronome does not access payment information.

Platforms

True Metronome runs on Android, iOS, macOS and the web. Browser access is useful for a quick session without a download, while the mobile and Mac apps cover practice across those platforms.

Who it's for

Classical musicians, music teachers and students are the clearest fit: the app combines conventional tempo and meter controls with a pendulum, progress tracking and beat detection. It also works for anyone who wants a broad tempo range and a no-account free plan. Those who rely on frequent Tap Tempo use or need Pro-only practice features should budget for the one-time purchase; users seeking only basic beats may not need the added tracking and detection.

Pros and cons

Pro: The 20–400 BPM range, custom time signatures and subdivision control support varied practice rather than only straight beats.
Pro: Practice history and real-time Beat Detection add useful tools for monitoring routine and finding tempo from audio.
Pro: Free use requires no account, and the teacher page says practice is ad-free.
Con: Free Tap Tempo stops at five uses per day, so players who regularly find tempos by tapping may find the free plan restrictive.
Con: The more extensive pattern, training, detection and Apple-device integrations are reserved for Pro.

Verdict

True Metronome is a strong fit for classical players, teachers and students who want a full-range metronome with practice tracking and tempo detection, without paying to start. Its main reason to choose Pro is the one-time 9.99 USD purchase for unlimited Tap Tempo and a deeper set of practice tools; look elsewhere if you need a platform it does not support or if the free daily tapping cap is a deal-breaker.
