Overview

Mextures combines an iOS photo editor, texture and film-preset products, shareable editing recipes called Formulas, and a free Photoshop plugin. The iOS app’s adjustable layers give effects room to develop without locking the image into one treatment. Desktop use is less dependable as a choice right now: Console is in beta, and its current version crashes with the latest Photoshop and macOS Sonoma.

Key features

Layer-by-layer control: The iOS app supports unlimited layers that users can move, hide, rotate and adjust for opacity. That flexibility is useful for building an effect in stages and revising a particular element, rather than accepting a single preset unchanged.
Texture range: More than 200 stackable textures include grain, dust, light leaks and color gradients. This range suits expressive photography and artwork, but its focus on overlays makes Mextures a specialized effects collection, not a complete photo-editing workflow.
Presets and recipes: The iOS app includes 30 film presets and more than 300 professionally created Formulas. Formula Manager imports recipes from other users and exports users’ own, making it easier to reuse or share a look.
Preset compatibility: Film Presets work with Console, Lightroom CC 2021/2022, Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere; separate purchases require software-specific versions. These presets are not conversion LUTs, so RAW or LOG footage needs normalization before use. That extra step matters for filmmakers who expect a preset to handle conversion as well as style.
Commercial projects: The terms permit using textures in personal work and projects for commercial or paid clients. Resale or redistribution requires written consent, so the license supports client work but not repackaging the assets.

Pricing

Mextures has a free plan and paid options, but the offers serve different needs rather than forming a simple upgrade ladder.

Console — 0.00 USD per free: A free Photoshop plugin, currently in beta, with future plugin updates also remaining free. It is the lowest-cost way into Photoshop, but the current crash issue with the latest Photoshop and macOS Sonoma makes it a risky choice for a workflow that needs reliability now.
Mextures Photo Editor — 1.99 USD per once: The iOS app is a low-cost entry point for editing on iOS; in-app purchases are also offered, so the one-time app price does not imply that all additional content is included.
X-Film Overlay Pack — 10.00 USD per month: Includes 11 overlays at 4000 x 4000 pixels. It fits someone seeking a particular overlay pack, but a monthly charge is a poor fit for a one-off asset purchase unless continued access is useful.
Mextures Yearly Membership — 89.00 USD per year: Includes all products during the subscription, packs released during that period and beta Console access. It suits users who expect to draw on a changing collection throughout the year; desktop purchase does not unlock iOS in-app purchases.
Mextures Lifetime Membership — 139.00 USD per month: Billed Pay Once, it provides lifetime access to all Mextures products and future overlay and color-grade packs, with no yearly subscription. It is the clearest fit for long-term users who want to avoid annual renewal; the listed monthly term and Pay Once billing are both worth noting when comparing it with the yearly plan.

Platforms

Mextures is available across iOS, macOS and Windows, though platform support depends on the product. Console works with Photoshop CC 2016–2023 on Windows 10 or newer and macOS 11 or newer, while its current beta crash issue affects the latest Photoshop and macOS Sonoma. The iOS app is a separate purchase path, and a desktop membership does not unlock its in-app purchases.

Who it's for

Mextures is aimed at photographers, filmmakers and designers making work such as landscapes, portraits, macro images, album art, matte paintings, social media posts and blogs. It makes most sense for people who want a recognizable film-like finish and value building or sharing recipes. It is less suitable for anyone looking for general-purpose image editing, or for video creators who need RAW or LOG conversion built into their presets.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited adjustable iOS layers, a broad texture set and hundreds of Formulas provide several ways to shape and revise effects.
Pro: Commercial client work is permitted, so the textures can be used in paid projects without a separate client-work restriction.
Con: Console is in beta and has a current crash issue with the latest Photoshop and macOS Sonoma, weakening its case for dependable desktop editing.
Con: Film Presets do not convert RAW or LOG footage; users must normalize it first.
Con: Separate software-specific preset versions are required, and desktop membership does not include iOS in-app purchases.

Alternatives

For a broader texture-library comparison, start with Texture Libraries; readers focused on photographic looks can also compare Photo Preset Libraries and Photo Editing Software.

ambientCG is the better fit when a free, downloadable asset library under CC0 is the priority.
Poliigon suits readers seeking a free tier with PBR textures, models and HDRIs, plus local search and drag-and-drop import through Polydex Core.
Texturelabs is worth considering for free original textures and tutorials with commercial use allowed under its terms, or for its separate Photoshop Distressor plugin.
SketchUp Texture Club may suit readers who can work within a free account’s daily download cap and resolution limits, or want a yearly Club Member plan.
Textures.com offers a free sample selection and a Starter plan with monthly credits, for readers comparing a credit-based texture library.
Architextures is an option for web-based texture work, with free standard downloads for personal and educational use and a paid Pro tier for high-resolution downloads.
Cinegrams is another paid creative-asset collection, with a one-time Season I Master Bundle purchase.
FreePBRTextures is a straightforward alternative for a free web library of CC0 textures, including 4K assets and no-signup downloads.

Verdict

Choose Mextures if you want a substantial texture-and-Formula toolkit for layered, film-like images, especially on iOS or in commercial creative work. Its main advantage is the breadth of adjustable effects and reusable recipes; look elsewhere if reliable current Photoshop support or RAW/LOG conversion is central to your workflow.
