Overview

sfizz can load existing SFZ instrument libraries or serve as an engine for creating personal instruments. Its support is complete for SFZv1 but only partial for SFZv2, so it is a better fit for libraries that do not depend on newer format features. The project describes itself as hobbyist-driven, and the GitHub repository was archived on June 21, 2026; that read-only status is a meaningful concern for anyone choosing software on the expectation of ongoing development.

Key features

Plugin and standalone operation: VST3i, Audio Unit and LV2 versions fit workstation setups, while the standalone JACK client offers an option for advanced users outside a plugin host.
Instrument editing: Hot reload lets makers change a custom instrument and test revisions without manually interacting with sfizz between edits, making it useful for iterative SFZ work.
Streaming: Sounds are loaded on demand and memory for sounds no longer in use is reclaimed dynamically. That approach helps avoid keeping every sample resident throughout a session.
Sample playback: Sample mapping and round-robin playback are supported, with WAV, FLAC and WavPack formats.
Developer integration: The engine accepts an SFZ file and MIDI-type events, then renders audio through successive callback calls. Its C and C++ API bindings allow integration into another program; the project also names Carla and Ardour as LV2 host options.

Pricing

sfizz — free. Use requires no financial return, and optional donations are accepted through Open Collective. There is no paid tier or trial to weigh against the free option, so the central cost is the format and project-status trade-off rather than a subscription commitment.

Platforms

Downloads include Linux packages, Windows 32-bit and 64-bit installers, and a universal macOS package for Intel and Apple Silicon. Windows installers support Windows 7 and later. The download page lists version 1.2.3, released January 14, 2024. On Linux, the plugin file requester depends on zenity; without it, selecting an SFZ or Scala file may do nothing. The project also offers an API and web platform designation.

Who it's for

sfizz is a sensible choice for musicians with SFZ libraries, especially those working in an LV2, VST3i or Audio Unit host, and for instrument makers who want hot reload while refining their own files. Developers can also consider it as a library when they need an SFZ engine with C and C++ bindings. It is a weaker choice when full SFZv2 compatibility or confidence in an actively maintained repository is essential.

Pros and cons

Pros

No required payment: Users can run it without financial return, and donations are optional.
Several workflow options: Plugin formats, standalone JACK operation and library integration cover musician and developer use.
On-demand streaming: Samples are loaded as needed and unused sounds release memory dynamically.
Useful instrument-building workflow: Hot reload avoids manual interaction between edits and checks.

Cons

Incomplete SFZv2 compatibility: Instruments relying on unsupported SFZv2 features may not work completely.
Archived repository: The read-only repository offers no assurance of continued development.
Linux requester dependency: Without zenity, file selection may fail silently.

Alternatives

Sampler Software is the broader category for comparing sampler options. Consider TX16Wx Software Sampler if a freemium sampler with a free trial and Linux, macOS and Windows support better matches your needs. Momentum is another freemium option with a free trial, macOS, web and Windows support, and a free tier for slicing, editing and manipulating WAV and AIFF audio.

Vaporizer 2 is a free alternative for Linux, macOS and Windows, with standalone and plugin formats under GPL-3.0. Choose Decent Sampler if you need to play libraries in its .dspreset and .dslibrary formats, or LinuxSampler if its GNU GPL terms and platform coverage suit your use; commercial hardware or software use of LinuxSampler requires prior written permission.

Subsample is another free option. Quanta 2 is worth considering if a paid sampler with a free trial and a perpetual license is preferable: it costs 99.00 USD per once, with no subscription or DRM. Just a Sample is a free, open-source sampler for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Verdict

Choose sfizz if you want a no-required-payment way to play or build SFZ instruments across plugin, standalone and developer workflows. Its streaming and hot reload are practical strengths, but partial SFZv2 support and the archived repository make it the wrong pick for users who need full newer-format compatibility or an actively maintained project.
