Overview

mpv plays a wide range of media formats, audio and video codecs, and subtitle types, including MKV and MP4. Network playback, 4K playback, and hardware acceleration make it capable beyond basic local-file playback. But anyone who expects to browse and manage playback through a conventional graphical player should look elsewhere.

Key features

Broad playback support: Wide format, codec, and subtitle support helps reduce compatibility hurdles; network playback extends that flexibility beyond files stored locally.
Fine-grained video output: OpenGL, Vulkan, and D3D11 output supports scaling, color management, frame timing, interpolation, and HDR. That range is useful to viewers who want to tune rendering, but offers less to someone who just wants a simple player.
Hardware decoding: mpv can use most hardware decoding APIs on its platforms, and decoding can be enabled while the player is running. That lets users choose when to use hardware decoding rather than relying only on a startup setting.
Scripting and embedding: User scripts can extend the player, and its C API lets developers integrate it into other applications. This makes mpv more adaptable than a player limited to its built-in controls, provided you are comfortable working with scripts or code.
Minimal interface: The small on-screen controller covers basic control, but mpv has no full GUI. Command-line users may welcome that focus; viewers looking for a conventional point-and-click experience may find it limiting.

Pricing

mpv is free and open source: its Free and open source plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes a command-line media player with wide media-format, codec, and subtitle support. There are no paid plans to weigh against that offer. The project is licensed under GPLv2 or later by default; builds made with -Dgpl=false can use LGPLv2.1 or later.

Platforms

mpv supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Its system requirements call for Windows 10 1607 or later, macOS 10.15 or later, or a not-too-ancient Linux distribution, along with a capable CPU and GPU. Official installation guidance covers these platforms and source builds, while noting that many binaries come from unofficial third-party builders. For most users building from source, the project recommends helper scripts that produce a static build with FFmpeg, libplacebo, and libass.

Security support is tied to the release cycle: only the latest stable release receives security updates, and older releases are unsupported and unmaintained. mpv is a desktop player, not designed for untrusted environments; it intentionally supports user scripts, subprocesses, and playback control through IPC. Users should keep to the current stable release and take care about the media and scripts they run.

Who it's for

mpv is a strong fit for command-line users, viewers who value configurable video output, and developers who want scripting or a C API for embedding playback. Its combination of format support, hardware decoding, and advanced video features serves users who want more control than basic playback requires. It is a weaker fit for people who prioritize a complete graphical interface and prefer not to configure or extend their player.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad format, codec, and subtitle support, plus network and 4K playback, covers varied playback needs.
Pro: Advanced video output controls and hardware decoding give technically inclined viewers ways to shape rendering and decoding.
Pro: Scripting and the embeddable C API make the player useful beyond standalone playback.
Con: No full GUI means basic controls do not add up to a conventional graphical-player experience.
Con: Older stable releases receive no security updates, so staying current matters.
Con: Its script, subprocess, and IPC support makes it unsuitable for untrusted environments.

For a free player with no spyware, ads, or user tracking, consider VLC media player, which supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. KMPlayer is another freemium option for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows.

5KPlayer is a free alternative for iOS, macOS, and Windows. SMPlayer is a free, GPL-licensed option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. RealPlayer has a free plan with 720p downloads and paid plans for 8K downloads. MPlayer is a free GNU GPL version 2 option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. DivX Player is a freemium macOS and Windows option whose free plan includes playback up to 4K, playlists and media-library features, and casting to DLNA-compatible devices.

Verdict

Choose mpv if you want a free player with broad playback support, configurable video output, and room to extend or embed it. Its command-line design and sparse controls are the main reason to look elsewhere; for a conventional graphical player, mpv is the wrong fit.
