In their own words
mpv
mpv is a free, open-source command-line media player for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. It plays a wide range of media formats, audio and video codecs, and subtitle types, including Matroska (MKV) and MP4, with network playback and 4K playback support. Its interface is deliberately limited: there is no full graphical interface, only a small on-screen controller for basic playback. Video output is based on OpenGL, Vulkan, and D3D11, with scaling, color management, frame timing, interpolation, and HDR features. mpv can use hardware decoding APIs on its supported platforms, and decoding can be switched on while the player is running. Scripts and user-created scripts can extend its behavior; developers can also use its C API to embed it in other applications. The project is actively developed. The default license is GPLv2 or later, with LGPLv2.1 or later available for builds configured with -Dgpl=false. Only the latest stable release receives security updates.
Volumio
Volumio brings music files and streaming services together in a music player platform, with network playback and control through a browser or dedicated iOS and Android apps. The free software is offered for Raspberry Pi and PC, and listed supported platforms also include Linux, web browser, iOS, and Android. Standard includes NAS mounting through CIFS and NFS, UPnP and AirPlay playback, internet radio directories, and custom playlists. Its format list spans MP3, FLAC, WAV, DSD, AAC, and other audio formats, as well as video formats including MP4, MKV, and WebM. Volumio describes playback as optimized for bit-perfect audio from MP3 to DSD. Premium adds synchronized multiroom playback and use on up to six devices, plus Qobuz and TIDAL integrations, CD playback and ripping, Bluetooth playback, and digital and analog inputs. Users can cast to Chromecast-enabled devices or Sonos. Developers have WebSocket and HTTP REST APIs and plugins. Premium costs $8.49 a month or $79.99 a year. Volumio was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in Florence, Italy.
