Overview

MyFitnessPal is a food, exercise, calorie, and nutrition-goal tracker for individuals who want to keep a personal record across mobile and web. Its large food database and usable free tier make it a sensible starting point; more demanding logging and meal planning come at a recurring cost.

The Today tab gives access to a public database of 22 million food items. Free users can log food and exercise, use recipes and measurements, and connect partner apps. Progress tracking is supported, but the lack of client goals and a client mobile app makes MyFitnessPal a poor choice for practitioners managing clients.

Key features

Logging and nutrition controls

The free plan covers basic food and exercise logging. Premium adds barcode scanning, Meal Scan, voice logging, and multi-day food logging. These options offer more ways to record meals, but users who are happy with basic entry may have little reason to pay for them.

Premium also includes nutrition analysis and macro goals set by grams or percentage, with different goals for different days. That extra control suits people following a more structured nutrition routine; it is less compelling if a simple food and exercise log is enough.

Meal planning

Premium+ adds customized weekly meal plans, more than 1,500 recipes, automated logging, grocery lists, and recipe sharing. The planner is limited to Premium+ users in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia, and it is not available on the website. It is therefore a better fit for eligible users who want planning and shopping support in addition to tracking, not for people who need to plan from a browser or live elsewhere.

Connections and support

Accounts sync automatically across supported platforms when users sign in with the same login and have an internet connection. With relevant sharing permissions enabled, MyFitnessPal can sync food, exercise, weight, and sleep data with Apple Health. Other connections include Google Health (formerly Fitbit), Apple Watch, Health Connect, Garmin Connect, and Samsung Health. Premium subscribers receive priority customer support.

MyFitnessPal says it uses technical, organizational, and administrative safeguards to protect personal information, while cautioning that no security measures can guarantee security. Its services are intended for people aged 18 and older.

Pricing

The free plan is free and includes food and exercise logging, recipes, measurements, and partner app connections. It is a practical fit for basic tracking, but it does not include Premium's barcode and voice logging, custom nutrition goals, ad-free use, or priority support.

Premium costs 19.99 USD per month on the monthly plan, or 79.99 USD per year on the annual plan. Both include barcode and voice logging, custom nutrition goals, ad-free use, and priority support; Premium features also include Meal Scan, multi-day food logging, and nutrition analysis. The annual option lowers the effective monthly cost for someone committed to a full year, while the monthly plan avoids that longer billing commitment.

Premium+ costs 24.99 USD/mo., billed monthly, or 99.99 USD billed annually. It includes Premium features plus weekly meal plans, recipes, and automated grocery lists. The annual price is the lower-cost route for a year-round planner; the monthly price may suit someone who wants a shorter commitment. The 7-day trial offers a brief chance to assess paid features, but the monthly prices are substantial relative to the free plan if those features will see only occasional use.

Platforms

MyFitnessPal runs on Android, iOS, and the web. The account syncs across supported platforms with the same login and an internet connection, though Premium+ Meal Planner is unavailable on the website.

Who it's for

Choose MyFitnessPal if you want an individual food and activity log backed by a broad database, especially if its free features are enough or you value Premium's additional logging and nutrition controls. Premium+ is the more relevant tier for eligible users who want weekly plans and grocery support. Coaches who need client goals or a client mobile app should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros

Large food database: 22 million items provide a wide selection for logging.
Useful free core: food and exercise logging, recipes, measurements, and partner app connections do not require a paid plan.
Flexible tracking upgrades: Premium combines several logging methods with more tailored macro goals and nutrition analysis.
Connected health data: Apple Health syncing and connections to several device and health services can bring related tracking together.

Cons

Paid logging tools: barcode scanning, Meal Scan, voice logging, and multi-day logging require Premium.
Meal planning has restrictions: Premium+ planning is country-limited and unavailable on the website.
Premium pricing adds up: monthly plans cost 19.99 USD per month for Premium and 24.99 USD/mo. for Premium+.
Not built for client management: it has no client goals or client mobile app.

Alternatives

Eat This Much is worth considering if meal planning is the priority: its Premium plan is 5.00 USD per month with an annual subscription and includes weekly meal planning, automatic grocery lists and delivery integration, and leftovers.

Cronometer may suit readers who prioritize nutrient detail, with its free Basic plan tracking up to 84 nutrients and other compounds and reports and charts within a 7-day window. Theron is another individual-tracking alternative, with a free plan that includes five barcode scans per day and logging streaks.

CoachVana, Practice Better, Foodzilla, and Well&Co are alternatives for readers comparing other fitness, nutrition, or coaching tools.

Verdict

MyFitnessPal is a strong fit for individuals who want a broad food database and can get what they need from basic logging or Premium's added tracking controls. Its main case is convenient personal tracking across connected platforms; look elsewhere if you need client management, browser-based meal planning, or a lower-cost paid planning tool.
