In their own words
NAPS2
NAPS2 is free, open-source software for scanning documents and saving them as PDF, TIFF, JPEG, or PNG. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and supports WIA and TWAIN drivers with flatbed or automatic document feeder scanners, including duplex scanning. Users can reorder, interleave, rotate, crop, deskew, and adjust scanned pages’ brightness and contrast. OCR makes scans searchable, supports more than 100 languages, and can add text recognition to imported PDFs. NAPS2 can share scanners across a local network using ESCL, including with compatible Android and iPhone apps, but it must remain running on the server for sharing to work. It can send email through Gmail and Outlook, with the email address and secure sending token kept on the user’s computer and sent only to the relevant provider. Optional developer tools include a command-line interface for automation and a .NET scanning library. The free plan has no ads or restrictions, though OCR results cannot be saved directly to a text file.
Photo Scan by Photomyne
Photo Scan by Photomyne turns photos, slides, negatives, documents, and other keepsakes into digital materials for a family library. Its scanning tools can detect and crop images, rotate them, correct perspective, and restore color. The app says it can scan dozens of photos into digital albums in minutes. Users can sharpen photos, apply color filters, colorize black-and-white images, and use AI restoration with extra credits. Albums support text and audio, names, location and date tags, attached photo backs, and detected text. Web links let people view shared materials; account members can access and edit photos online, including on a PC. Google Photos uploads are available after users authorize access, which Photomyne says does not expose existing Google Photos items. The basic app includes utility features with ads. Membership adds unlimited backup and online photo access. The annual plan is $59.99 a year after a 3-day free trial and auto-renews until canceled. Generated sharing links can be viewed by anyone who has them and may remain active while the account has an active subscription.
