In their own words
Natron
Natron is a free, open-source application for visual-effects compositing in digital post-production. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows and uses a node-based workflow to build, group, and save custom tools and presets. Its interface includes more than 100 nodes, with listed tools for chroma keying, matte refinement, rotoscoping, rotopaint, tracking, and stabilization. Natron supports OpenFX and community-made plugins, as well as OpenImageIO, OpenColorIO, and 32-bit floating-point linear color processing. Python scripting includes expressions, user-defined parameters, scripts, callbacks, and GUI extensions. Rendering options include headless command-line work and integration with render farms for distributed rendering. Natron has no 3D workspace, though it can be used with Blender and supports CHAN camera-tracking files. Listed minimum requirements are 3 GB RAM, 5 GB free disk space, a 1280×1024 display, and OpenGL 2.0 for hardware-accelerated GPU rendering. The project lists version 2.5.0, released November 25, 2022.
PopcornFX
PopcornFX is a suite for authoring and simulating real-time visual effects, using visual programming, engine integrations, and a runtime framework for custom engines. Its Effect Editor supports real-time 3D editing and testing, node-based programming, reusable content, and performance and memory analysis. The editor also includes mesh, texture, vectorfield, and material tools, plus project and content management. It does not create textures, sound, meshes, or other assets usually made with DCC tools. Integrations are listed for Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, O3DE, and a C++ SDK; plugin sources are available on GitHub, and plugins for Unity, Unreal Engine, O3DE, and Adobe After Effects are freely accessible. The Unity integration is described as compatible with Unity 2020.3 and later, including HDRP, URP, and legacy renderers. PopcornFX runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Its Personal Learning Edition is free for non-commercial or educational use. The Indie plan costs €25 per user per month on an annual basis; commercial evaluations can start a one-month trial through an Indie, Professional, or Enterprise category.
