| Architecture | The CLI provides commands that encourage well-structured applications and supports Nest schematics. | Play uses a lightweight, stateless architecture built on Pekko Streams for reactive scaling and predictable resource use. |
| Runtime requirements | The CLI binary requires Node.js v20.11 or later, while schematics for `nest new`, `nest generate`, and `nest upgrade` require Node.js v22.22.3+, v24.15+, or v26+. | Play requires Java LTS 11, 17 or 21 and recommends the latest sbt launcher. |

In their own words
NestJS CLI
NestJS CLI is a command-line tool for creating, developing, and maintaining Nest applications. Its `nest new` command scaffolds a project with boilerplate files and lets you choose ESM or CommonJS. The `nest generate` command creates or changes files according to a schematic, while other commands compile an application or workspace, or compile and run an application. The CLI supports standard and monorepo modes, including built-in library support for monorepos, and its commands are designed to encourage well-structured applications. You can install a Nest-packaged library with `add`, which runs its install schematic, or use `deploy` to deploy an application to the cloud powered by Mau. The CLI is free and open source under the MIT license. It supports TypeScript and JavaScript. Global npm installation and running through npx are both documented options. The CLI binary requires Node.js v20.11 or later; the `new`, `generate`, and `upgrade` schematics require Node.js v22.22.3+, v24.15+, or v26+. The Node.js binary must include ICU internationalization support.
Play Framework
Play Framework is a free, open-source full-stack framework for building applications in Java or Scala. It supports server-side rendering and includes an ORM for database mapping. Applications are deployed on self-hosted infrastructure, so teams use their own hosting environment. The framework is available on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Its listed capabilities make it relevant to developers choosing a framework for server-rendered applications with database mapping included. The open-source license model means there is no listed software charge. One notable omission is built-in authentication: teams that need authentication will have to address that separately. Play Framework’s defined scope here is centered on Java or Scala, server-side rendering, an included ORM, and self-hosted deployment. Those details help clarify both its framework coverage and the infrastructure and access-control decisions teams must make around an application.
