Overview

Wanos combines WAN acceleration, traffic management and reporting, running on dedicated appliances or virtual machines. It preserves source and destination addresses rather than translating them or proxying traffic, which matters to networks that need those addresses to remain intact. For best reduction rates, the FAQ recommends at least two WAN optimization appliances; a single appliance may therefore be a poor fit for the intended deployment.

Key features

WAN optimization: TCP acceleration, cross-flow deduplication, stream compression, packet-loss recovery and forward error correction address several sources of WAN inefficiency. The range is useful when teams want multiple optimization methods in one product, though each Plus tier caps WAN optimization throughput.
Traffic management: Layer 7 quality of service and traffic shaping provide controls for managing traffic. Plus adds SD-WAN path selection and a Layer 7 firewall lite feature, making it the relevant edition for buyers who need those capabilities.
Deployment: Wanos supports physical appliances and virtual machines, with OVA for VMware/ESXi, VHD for Hyper-V and a Linux Container LXD release. Bridge mode, tunnel mode and network transparency offer additional deployment options.
Reporting: A graphical interface, NetFlow exports, QoS graphs, top protocols and top talkers help operators inspect traffic and service behavior.

Pricing

Free Express v.3.2.3 costs 0.00 USD per free and is a perpetual release, with 10 Mbps WAN optimization and 100 Mbps SD-WAN. It is suited to limited remote-site use, but is capped at two licenses per client, limited to version 3.2.3 and earlier, and excludes professional support.

Plus is priced per instance and billed annually. Plus 10 / 100 costs 970.00 USD per year for 10 Mbps WAN optimization and 100 Mbps SD-WAN; Plus 20 / 200 costs 1940.00 USD per year for 20 Mbps and 200 Mbps; Plus 50 / 200 costs 2750.00 USD per year for 50 Mbps and 200 Mbps; Plus 100 / 200 costs 3700.00 USD per year for 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps; Plus 200 / 400 costs 4700.00 USD per year for 200 Mbps and 400 Mbps. Each tier is defined by its per-instance capacity, so buyers should match it to the WAN load they need to optimize. All Plus licenses apply only to WAN outbound traffic; pass-through traffic is not counted.

Plus includes support. The support document describes phone, email and web support, with an eight-hour response target for critical-severity incidents. Companies interested in Plus can contact Wanos for a trial; no duration is stated.

Platforms

Wanos is available for Linux, self-hosted and web environments. The named virtual-machine formats are VMware/ESXi OVA and Hyper-V VHD, alongside an LXD Linux Container release. Physical appliance deployment is also supported.

Who it's for

Wanos is a stronger fit for organizations managing multiple WAN sites that can provision at least two appliances and select an appropriate per-instance capacity. Express may suit limited remote sites where the older perpetual release and lack of professional support are acceptable. Buyers needing Plus features, higher throughput or support should weigh the annual per-instance cost against their outbound traffic needs.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple optimization techniques, Layer 7 traffic controls and reporting give network operators a broad toolkit.
Pros: Appliance and virtual-machine deployment, plus address preservation, suit environments where deployment flexibility and original source and destination addresses matter.
Cons: The best reduction rates call for at least two appliances, which makes Wanos less compelling for a single-site setup.
Cons: Express is restricted to version 3.2.3 and earlier, capped at two licenses per client and lacks professional support.
Cons: Plus licensing covers outbound optimized traffic only and is priced annually per instance.

Alternatives

For other WAN optimization options, browse WAN Optimization Software. AppEx CloudWAN may suit buyers seeking internet and dedicated-line service with deployment across 600+ POPs; its CloudWAN plan is priced by bandwidth per year, month or day. ExpeDat is worth considering when its server-license model and stated unlimited bandwidth better match the requirement. Replify WAN Optimization offers a 14-day trial with no payment information required. Resilio Active Everywhere may suit buyers who prefer pricing based on devices or endpoints rather than data volume or transfer usage. Riverbed Aternity, Neverfail HybriStor, Veeam Recovery Orchestrator and Veeam Agent for Mac are also alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Choose Wanos if your organization needs several WAN optimization methods, Layer 7 traffic controls and flexible appliance or virtual deployment, and can budget for the required capacity across sites. Look elsewhere if a two-appliance deployment, outbound-only licensing or Express's version and support limits do not fit your network.
