| Integrations | For OEM integration, the project recommends running Nmap and parsing its XML-formatted output, and also permits other approaches such as parsing normal output or processing its data files. | vRx can ingest findings from connected scanners and EDR platforms, and its orchestration can route recommended actions through vRx or a connected platform for approval. |
| Purpose | Nmap is a free and open-source utility for network discovery and security auditing. | vRx consolidates vulnerability management with patch management, patchless protection, and a scripting engine to remediate vulnerabilities. |
| Scripting | The Nmap Scripting Engine runs user-written or bundled scripts in parallel to automate networking tasks, including discovery and vulnerability checks. | vScript runs custom, community, and AI-generated scripts in PowerShell, Bash, or Batch across Windows, macOS, and Linux. |
| Support | The free version has no warranty and is supported by a community, while active OEM maintenance subscriptions include commercial technical support. | The Vicarius site links to a customer support portal. |

In their own words
Nmap
Nmap is a free, open-source utility for discovering networks and auditing security. It uses raw IP packets to identify available hosts, services and versions, operating systems, and packet filters or firewalls. Scanning options include TCP and UDP ports, OS and version detection, and ping sweeps. Network administrators can use it to inventory systems, plan service upgrades, and monitor host or service uptime. The Nmap Scripting Engine runs bundled or user-written scripts in parallel for networking tasks such as discovery and vulnerability checks. The suite also includes Zenmap, a graphical interface and results viewer; Ncat for data transfer and debugging; Ndiff for comparing scan results; and Nping for packet generation and response analysis. Most port-scan types require privileged access to send and receive raw packets, although unprivileged users can run connect and FTP bounce scans. Nmap is not a comprehensive vulnerability scanner. End-user use is free, but redistribution in commercial products requires an OEM license. Quarterly OEM licenses start at $9,980.00 per 3 months for eligible small or startup companies.
Vicarius vRx
Vicarius vRx combines vulnerability management with patch management, patchless protection, and scripting to remediate security findings. It prioritizes vulnerabilities using exploitability and environment context, and discovers endpoints, servers, network devices, IoT, and containers through agent-based or agentless methods. The platform advertises automated patch deployment across more than 20,000 third-party applications and operating systems. When a patch is unavailable, vShield offers in-memory protection for vulnerable applications, including legacy and end-of-life systems. vScript runs custom, community, and AI-generated PowerShell, Bash, or Batch scripts across Windows, macOS, and Linux. vRx can ingest findings from connected scanners and EDR platforms, route suggested actions for approval, and revalidate fixes after execution. It maps findings and remediation to frameworks including HIPAA, PCI DSS, Cyber Essentials, and more than 100 CIS Benchmarks. Basic is listed at $4 a month and Essential at $5 a month, billed per asset; each covers 100 workstations and servers. Both list a 14-day free trial. Custom pricing is scope-based and not listed.
