Overview

Visual Studio Code is an open-source editor for building software, with optional AI-assisted editing and agent workflows. It suits developers who want one adaptable editor across languages and desktop systems. Its breadth is compelling, though browser execution is limited and extensions carry meaningful permissions.

Key features

JavaScript, TypeScript, CSS, and HTML work out of the box; extensions extend the editor to almost every major programming language. The Marketplace’s more than 80,000 extensions make it possible to tailor VS Code to many workflows, but that flexibility calls for careful selection: extensions can access files, make network requests, and run processes with the editor’s permissions. Signatures are checked during installation, a useful safeguard that does not eliminate those risks.

Multi-cursor and column editing, large-file handling, an integrated terminal, code running and debugging, build tasks, and local history give the editor substance beyond basic text entry. Git source control is built in, and connections to GitHub Codespaces and remote development environments support work beyond a local checkout. Remote Development can open a folder in a container on a remote machine, while Settings Sync and profiles help carry preferred settings and customization sets between instances.

AI features range from inline suggestions and intelligent completions to agents that can plan tasks, edit code, run commands, and iterate. Copilot and third-party providers are supported, with an option to bring a model key; instructions, skills, custom agents, MCP servers, plugins, and extensions provide ways to shape the workflow. Getting started with AI agents requires a GitHub account, a consideration for users who would rather not tie that setup to one.

Pricing

Visual Studio Code is free and is free for private or commercial use. There is no free trial because the editor is free to use; there is no paid editor tier or stated seat or usage cap to weigh against the free plan. The license and privacy statement apply, and the license says Microsoft may not provide support services. The free price makes it an easy fit for individual developers and organizations alike, but teams needing guaranteed support should account for that limitation.

Platforms

The desktop editor runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux, with downloads offered for macOS, Windows, and Linux DEB or RPM packages. VS Code for the Web adds browser access, but its execution environment is limited, so it is not a full substitute for desktop use when a project depends on broader local execution. Insiders edition and other platforms are also offered. Organizations can restrict which extensions users install and host a private extension marketplace.

Workspace Trust can keep workspace code from running automatically when a project is in Restricted Mode. VS Code collects telemetry, which users can disable with the telemetry.telemetryLevel setting; extensions may collect telemetry separately. Those controls and caveats matter for privacy-conscious users and managed environments.

Who it's for

VS Code is a strong choice for developers who value a configurable editor that spans common languages, remote environments, and both conventional and agent-assisted work. Its included language support and extensive extension ecosystem make it adaptable without requiring a separate editor for every task. It is less suitable for someone who needs a full execution environment in the browser, wants to avoid extension permission risks, or needs guaranteed support services.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free for private and commercial use, with core support for JavaScript, TypeScript, CSS, and HTML and extensions for broader language coverage.
Pros: Integrated terminal, debugging, build tasks, Git, and remote development bring editing and development work into one configurable editor.
Pros: AI suggestions and agent workflows accommodate both assisted editing and delegated task execution, with third-party providers and model keys supported.
Cons: AI agent setup requires a GitHub account, which may not suit users who want to keep that workflow independent.
Cons: The web editor has a limited execution environment, and extensions retain broad access despite signature verification.
Cons: Microsoft may not provide support services, and disabling editor telemetry does not control telemetry collected separately by extensions.

Alternatives

IntelliJ IDEA is worth considering for Java and Kotlin users who want its free core functionality, with an Ultimate subscription at 100.00 USD per year for those needing its paid tier. For a free project-oriented editor that runs on mobile as well as desktop and web, Blockbench offers broader platform coverage and no-strings-attached use for any type of project.

Architectury Loom is a narrower option for experimental Gradle 8.1-or-newer projects; it supports both IntelliJ IDEA and VS Code. Fabric is a free alternative for users seeking a Minecraft server software option, with its loader described as a bare minimum and most mods requiring Fabric API. Gradle is the alternative to consider when the need is an open-source build system rather than an editor, while ForgeGradle is another free option for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Retrom is a free alternative spanning Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and self-hosted use. Eclipse IDE is another free, open-source option for developers seeking a desktop IDE.

Verdict

Choose Visual Studio Code if you want a free, highly adaptable editor that combines everyday development tools with optional AI agents and remote workflows. Its breadth is the main reason to choose it; look elsewhere if browser execution, extension permissions, or guaranteed product support are decisive requirements.
