In their own words

Nx

Nx is a build system for JavaScript and TypeScript monorepos, with plugins that can extend its work to other languages. It builds project and task graphs, follows task dependencies, and runs work in parallel where possible. Nx Core provides local caching; Nx Cloud adds a remote cache shared by teams and CI, and can distribute tasks across Nx Agents according to CPU and memory use. Plugins can infer tasks, generate or alter code, update dependencies, and provide executors. Documented integrations include Angular, React, Vue, Node.js, Java, .NET, Vite, Webpack, Rspack, Jest, Cypress, and Playwright. Nx also provides CI workflow setup for GitHub, CircleCI, GitLab, Azure Pipelines, Jenkins, and Bitbucket Pipelines. Nx Cloud describes trusted-branch cache writes, artifact traceability, and invalidation of artifacts made with revoked tokens. API communications are encrypted in transit, and task artifacts can be encrypted end to end before remote caching. Hobby is free forever, with monthly credits, contributor and CI-connection limits; Team is $29/month, with additional listed charges for usage, contributors, and connections.

Pants

Pants is a free build system for codebases of different sizes, focused on Python, Go, Java, Scala, Kotlin, Shell, and Docker. It installs and coordinates development tools such as compilers, code generators, dependency resolvers, test runners, linters, formatters, packagers, and REPLs. By examining import statements, it can infer file dependencies and reduce manual declarations. The engine is written in Rust, and build rules use typed Python 3. Execution includes concurrency, fine-grained invalidation, hermetic runs, caching, and remote execution. Custom rules use the Pants plugin API and share the core rules’ execution semantics. Built-in integrations include Docker, Pex, Protodoc, Thrift, Protobuf, Helm, linting and formatting tools, packaging, and coverage. Lockfiles pin transitive dependency versions and expected SHA256 hashes, which Pants checks against downloaded artifacts. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows with WSL 2, subject to stated system requirements. The project is free under the Apache License 2.0 and offers community support through Slack, mailing lists, GitHub, and other channels.
