Overview

Railsr combines accounts and wallets, several card types, money transfers and reward programmes. Its APIs are designed to place those services inside a company’s own digital journey, while Railsr operates behind the scenes. The platform brings close to 100 integrations under one API and commercial agreement, a useful consolidation for businesses assembling multiple finance capabilities.

Railsr is the trading name of Embedded Finance Ltd, which acquired PayrNet Ltd in March 2023. PayrNet is a wholly owned subsidiary that holds regulated financial services licences and payment scheme memberships. Customers contract with PayrNet for regulated services and with Railsr for technology services. PayrNet’s UK electronic money institution licence is number 900594. Its listed memberships and licences include Visa and Mastercard principal issuing licences for the UK and Europe, UK Faster Payments and Bacs direct participation, indirect SEPA membership, and SUPE grade SWIFT membership.

Railsr says it cannot onboard new agents or distributors without prior written FCA consent. Businesses relying on either route should treat that as a qualification hurdle before investing in integration work.

Key features

Accounts and cards: Railsr supports embedded accounts and card issuing across debit, prepaid, credit and virtual cards. That breadth gives a product team several ways to build financial services into its offering, though the live plans impose different restrictions on products and users.
Payments and rewards: Money transfers and reward programmes sit alongside accounts and cards, letting companies draw on a wider financial toolkit through the platform.
API and integrations: Railsr says close to 100 integrations are packaged behind a single API and commercial agreement. For a company needing several finance services, that can reduce the number of separate connections and commercial relationships to manage.
Play Sandbox API: The Play Sandbox API uses fake money and is described as a fully functional platform for writing code against. It gives developers a place to work on an integration without moving real funds.
Regulated-service structure: PayrNet provides the regulated services, while Railsr provides technology. The separate contracts matter operationally: customers need to account for both entities rather than treating the offering as a single-provider relationship.

Pricing

Railsr uses a freemium model, with a free plan and pricing on request for paid plans. The headline free option, Live Sandbox API, is priced at no cost for two months. It is a real-money sandbox, but account, value and transaction restrictions apply; the short term makes it a starting point for evaluation, not an open-ended free operating plan.

Launch: Custom pricing for a live API restricted to one country or region. It suits a narrowly scoped launch, but the geographic limit is a material constraint for businesses planning multi-region availability.
Prototype: Custom pricing for a live API with restrictions on virtual cards and end-user numbers. It may fit a limited early-stage deployment, but those caps could constrain a product whose test or launch depends on broader card access or user growth.
Scale: Custom pricing for an enterprise live API, with products, usage and countries enabled. It is the broadest stated tier for companies with wider requirements, but the price must be requested.

The plan descriptions do not establish a published seat allowance, renewal term or usage quota. Existing customers can log in to the service portal to raise a support ticket.

Platforms

Railsr is available through an API and the web. The API is central to integrating finance capabilities into a company’s product; web access provides the other stated platform. Railsr also identifies supported regions as the UK, Europe, France, Lithuania, Poland and Malaysia.

Who it's for

Railsr is aimed at companies such as fintechs, sports clubs, retailers and brands that want to embed accounts, cards or payments in their digital products. It is a stronger fit for teams that can use an API-led model and need several finance capabilities under one commercial agreement. It is less suitable for businesses that need an unrestricted free live service, a published price before engaging, or onboarding as a new agent or distributor without prior written FCA consent.

Pros and cons

Pro: Accounts, multiple card types, transfers and rewards are available through one platform, which can reduce the complexity of combining those capabilities.
Pro: The Play Sandbox API uses fake money and supports code development, allowing integration work before live deployment.
Pro: PayrNet’s listed licences and scheme memberships provide a defined regulated-services structure for UK and European card issuing and payments.
Con: Live plans are custom-priced, so a company cannot compare their cost from a stated rate alone.
Con: The free Live Sandbox API lasts two months and has account, value and transaction restrictions.
Con: Launch is limited to one country or region, while Prototype restricts virtual cards and end-user numbers; neither stated tier is an unrestricted route to growth.
Con: New agents and distributors cannot be onboarded without prior written FCA consent, ruling out an assumption of open access for those business models.

Swan Cards is worth considering if a free sandbox is the priority: its Sandbox plan is free and includes unlimited sandbox users with fake accounts, cards and payments, plus an API explorer and testing tools.
Unit may suit teams seeking an API platform across Android, iOS and web as well as API access; actual card pricing, shipping and order minimums depend on programme and design choices.
Vodeno Cloud Platform is another paid option with Android, iOS, web and API platforms.
Paynetics Card Issuing is a paid alternative focused on customisable Visa or Mastercard physical and virtual card programmes.
Stripe Treasury may fit teams comparing paid API and web options that also have a free plan; its Treasury plan states no minimums or monthly fees, with ACH funding included and wire funding at $2.00 per wire.
Modulr is a paid alternative available on Android, iOS, web and API.
Column is a paid API and web alternative.
Dock is a paid API and web alternative.

Verdict

Railsr is a strong candidate for fintechs and established brands that want accounts, cards, transfers and rewards integrated through one API, with a sandbox for development. The main reasons to choose it are the breadth of its embedded finance toolkit and the consolidated integration model. Look elsewhere if custom pricing, a two-month restricted sandbox, the live-plan limits or the agent-and-distributor onboarding restriction do not fit your launch.
