In their own words
Open-E JovianDSS
Open-E JovianDSS is Linux- and ZFS-based software-defined storage for NAS, SAN, backup, business continuity, and disaster recovery. It supports iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NFS, SMB (CIFS), and NVMe-oF, and can run on physical servers or as a virtual storage appliance in hyper-converged environments. Listed virtualization compatibility includes VMware, Proxmox, Citrix, and Microsoft Hyper-V. Its storage features include pools, unlimited scalability, unlimited file and volume size, and unlimited snapshots and clones. It supports shared-storage and non-shared-storage high-availability clusters, plus snapshot-based backup and replication for on-site and off-site protection. JovianDSS Up33 supports native ZFS encryption at dataset or volume level. Licensing depends on architecture and capacity: mirrored arrays use usable capacity, while parity arrays count disk capacity excluding cache and spares. Prices include a 670.00 USD one-time 0TB product license and a 670.00 USD one-time 4TB extension. A 60-day trial is offered; there is no free plan.
TrueNAS
TrueNAS Community Edition is free storage software that provides file, block, and object storage through one interface. It uses ZFS capabilities including snapshots, replication, RAID-Z, and self-healing checksums. Listed services include SMB, NFS, iSCSI, S3 API compatibility, apps, Docker containers, and virtual machines. Administrators can manage it through a web UI or CLI and use SNMP, syslog, reporting, and the TrueNAS API. Security options include self-encrypted drives, dataset encryption, encrypted replication, WireGuard, OpenVPN, ACLs, and IP filtering. The maker lists integrations or certifications involving Kubernetes CSI, Proxmox, VMware, Veeam, Red Hat OpenShift, and others. The Community Edition is a free software download for x86 hardware, with support through forums, documentation, release notes, and bug ticketing. Professional support is described for Enterprise customers. TrueNAS publishes security advisories and recommends configuring systems according to its security best practices. Moving from TrueNAS CORE to Community Edition is a one-way upgrade.
