In their own words

Open Source Point of Sale

Open Source Point of Sale is a web-based sales and inventory system written in PHP, with MySQL or MariaDB for its data store. It handles stock for items and kits, supports multiple locations, and includes a register that logs transactions, quotations, invoicing, and VAT, GST, customer, and multi-tier taxes. Other operating tools cover expenses, cash up, receivings, gift cards, rewards, and restaurant tables. Users can print or email receipts, invoices, and quotations, and create and print barcodes. Multiple users can have permissions, with reports for sales, orders, expenses, and inventory status. Listed integrations include MailChimp and SMS messaging. The project supports different installation methods and lists PHP 8.2 to 8.4, MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.x, and Apache 2.4 as server requirements. The software is free at free. It uses MIT terms with a requirement to keep its visible footer signature on every page. Security patches cover versions 3.4.2 and later.

Posnic POS

Posnic POS is a local-first point-of-sale application for retail shops and restaurants, with optional paid cloud services. Its documented workflows include sales, returns, customer records, taxes, reporting, stock, purchases, stock logs, and price lists. The free Community Edition costs nothing and can be installed on Windows, macOS, or Linux, or self-hosted on an owned Ubuntu server for browser access over a local network. The desktop database and API run on the shop computer, and local billing can continue offline after Cloud setup. Posnic Cloud offers synchronization, off-site backups, and remote dashboards; its prices vary by country and billing period. The maker offers custom accounting and e-commerce integrations and free migration from named systems or Excel. The local edition needs no Posnic account and, according to the maker, sends no analytics or business-data telemetry to Posnic. Its desktop source is published under AGPL-3.0-only. The maker says it has not commissioned an independent security audit and that its hardware checks did not connect physical peripherals.
