| Installation | The CLI can be installed through npm, Homebrew, Scoop, PyPI, Docker, JAR, JBang, or a Bash launcher script. | The CLI is available as an npm package for Node.js or as a standalone executable marked experimental; installation instructions cover macOS, Windows, and Linux. |
| Integrations | The project documents Gradle, Maven, sbt, Bazel, GitHub, and CI/CD integrations; Cake is a third-party add-in. | The VS Code extension can import TypeSpec from existing OpenAPI 3 definitions and emit code from TypeSpec. |
| Purpose | Generates clients, servers, and documentation from OpenAPI 2.0 and 3.x documents. | TypeSpec is a language for designing APIs and data models, then generating schemas, API specifications, code, and documentation. |

In their own words
OpenAPI Generator
OpenAPI Generator produces API clients, server stubs, and documentation from OpenAPI 2.0 and 3.x documents. It offers more than 50 client generators and server stub generation for over 40 languages and technologies, including Java, Kotlin, Go, and PHP. Other outputs include Apache2 configuration, MySQL, GraphQL schemas, and formats such as HTML and Cwiki. It can also convert OpenAPI 2.0 documents into OpenAPI 3.x JSON or YAML. Generated output can be adapted with Mustache templates, configuration-provided files and extensions, or custom generators. Installation choices include npm, Homebrew, Scoop, PyPI, Docker, JAR, JBang, and a Bash launcher. The project documents Gradle, Maven, sbt, Bazel, GitHub, and CI/CD integrations. Supported operating systems include Linux, macOS, and Windows, though installer availability varies by system. The JAR option requires Java 11 or later. The project is free and describes a Slack community for questions and guidance.
TypeSpec
TypeSpec is a language for defining API shapes and data models, then producing schemas, API specifications, code, and documentation. Its standard library supports OpenAPI 3.0, JSON Schema 2020-12, and Protobuf. OpenAPI output can feed tools for API gateways, code generation, and validation; JSON Schema output can be used to validate data built from shared models. The HTTP library’s `@useAuth` decorator lets authors attach documented security schemes—including HTTP authentication, API keys, OAuth2, and OpenID Connect—to services, interfaces, or operations. Editor support for Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio includes syntax help and completion; the VS Code extension adds diagnostics, formatting, quick fixes, refactoring, and documentation preview. Users can extend TypeSpec with emitters and decorators. The CLI is available through npm for Node.js or as an experimental standalone executable, and a browser playground is available. TypeSpec is open source and free: free. Its emitter framework is experimental, and client emitters for JavaScript, Python, Java, and C# are in preview.
