In their own words
Opencast
Opencast is a free, open-source video management system for academic institutions, designed to capture and distribute video at scale. Administrators can schedule recordings and live streams, with classroom recording also possible depending on hardware. Opencast Studio captures video in a browser without requiring an Opencast installation. Configurable workflows can generate captions, add branding and thumbnails, and deliver media at chosen resolutions and bitrates. The integrated editor handles multiple streams, subtitles, and cover thumbnails. Fine-grained permissions control viewing and editing; learning platform integrations can provide single sign-on and video delivery. Opencast uses the Paella Player by default, while the separate Tobira portal can keep videos online during Opencast maintenance. Integrations include Brightspace, Canvas, ILIAS, Moodle, Sakai, Stud.IP, BigBlueButton, Zoom recording, Matomo, WordPress, Whisper, and YouTube. It runs on one Linux server or can scale across distributed Linux servers. Demo instances are available to explore the administrative interface and portal.
Stream
Stream is a video platform for institutions creating and delivering learning content through an LMS. It synchronizes recordings from Zoom, Teams and Webex, processes them and publishes them to matching courses. AI features include transcription, captions and translation in 98 languages, meeting-level answers, searchable transcripts with timestamp jumps, topic chapters and automatically created highlights; the site reports 98% transcription accuracy. Its media library provides browser editing, trimming, role-based permissions, controlled sharing and analytics. Listed LMS workflows cover Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, LTI and H5P, with dedicated Moodle plugins and automatic course matching. Stream is listed for web, API and self-hosted use, while deployment is described as cloud. There is no free plan, but a three-month Moodle pilot is offered without a credit card or commitment. Plans range from $29/month billed annually to custom enterprise pricing, with storage, integration, transcription and support differences.
