Overview

OpenEduCat brings student information management, learning tools and campus operations into one modular education platform. It suits institutions that want those functions connected, especially if they can self-host and shape the system around their needs. Its uncapped Community Edition is a strong starting point, but paid deployments require Core, and the hardware and hosting choices deserve careful consideration.

Key features

More than 70 modules share a single database, with real-time collaboration around student data. Assessments and certificates are supported, while native integrations connect admissions, fees, library and hostel operations. That breadth can reduce the need to stitch together separate academic and administrative systems; institutions should still choose modules deliberately, since features beyond the base are priced separately.

The Community Edition supports SCORM, xAPI and LTI 1.3, plus SAML, Shibboleth, OAuth2, Azure AD and Google Workspace SSO. API access and Android and iOS apps extend its reach. These are substantial standards and access options for a free edition, though a self-hosted installation depends on the institution's own technical capacity.

Deployment can be cloud-hosted or on-premise. Self-hosting uses Linux, Python 3.10+ and PostgreSQL 14+; institutions own their data and can run without student limits or license call-home. OpenEduCat describes FERPA-aligned handling, audit trails and enterprise-grade security. Its Free Edition is LGPL-3.0 licensed, with source code public on GitHub.

Pricing

The Community Edition costs 0.00 USD per free, with no learner cap and no time limit. There is no course or assignment cap either, although practical capacity depends on hardware. A 15-day trial is offered without a credit card, and the pricing model states there are no per-student fees. That makes the free edition especially attractive to institutions able to host and maintain it themselves.

Paid deployments require OpenEduCat Core — 1 Year at 489.00 USD per year. Modules & Apps — 1 Year costs 79.00 USD per year for modular features such as Assignment, Classroom, Exam and SSO. Core is the required base, so the modules price is an add-on rather than a standalone entry point. The 25 Users Cloud Pack — 1 Year costs 29.00 USD per year and is limited to 25 users; it is cloud-only.

Two-year options cost 978.00 USD per year for Core, 158.00 USD per year for Modules & Apps and 58.00 USD per year for the 25 Users Cloud Pack. Each is billed on a 2-year term with the third year free; the user pack remains cloud-only and capped at 25 users. On-premise buyers can instead choose OpenEduCat Core — One-Time On-Premise at 1319.00 USD per month and Modules & Apps — One-Time On-Premise at 208.00 USD per once. The Core charge remains required for every deployment. The site lists a No Refund Policy, an important consideration before committing.

Platforms

OpenEduCat supports Android, iOS, Linux, API access and self-hosting. Institutions can choose cloud hosting or on-premise deployment; self-hosting requires Linux, Python 3.10+ and PostgreSQL 14+.

Who it's for

OpenEduCat is a good fit for schools and other education institutions seeking connected academic and operational systems, flexible deployment and control of their data. Its free, uncapped edition particularly suits organizations with the hardware and technical capacity to run it. Institutions wanting a paid deployment should budget for Core before selecting modules; those seeking a small, cloud-only option should account for the 25-user pack's limit.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free edition has no time, course, assignment or learner cap, giving capable institutions room to scale without per-student charges.
Pros: More than 70 modules, shared data, standards support and integrations span both learning and campus operations.
Pros: Cloud and on-premise deployment, data ownership and self-hosting without license call-home give institutions meaningful control.
Cons: Every paid deployment requires Core, so the module price alone understates the entry cost.
Cons: Self-hosted capacity depends on hardware and requires a specific software stack, placing more operational responsibility on the institution.
Cons: The 25 Users Cloud Pack is limited to 25 users, and the No Refund Policy makes a paid commitment less forgiving.

Alternatives

For institutions focused on scheduling, UniTime is a free, open-source option with commercial support available for a fee; FET is another free choice with no stated usage limits. Choose Wise Timetable if a paid timetable product with a free trial and broad platform support is a better fit. aSc Timetables offers an unlimited free trial, though export is unavailable during it and purchase is required after generating a schedule. Untis uses sales-request pricing for its WebUntis base package; EMS Academic Scheduling likewise asks prospective customers to request a demo or contact sales. Skoolia offers an AI timetable plan at 39.00 USD per month for one school, up to 10 active projects, 150 active staff and 100 active classes. For examination management, Cloudilya Examination Management ERP may suit institutions seeking custom pricing based on modules and institution size, typically paid annually in advance.

Verdict

Choose OpenEduCat if your institution wants a broad, connected education platform and can make good use of its uncapped free edition or meet the technical demands of self-hosting. The modular scope and data control are its strongest reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a low-commitment paid start: Core is mandatory, and the no-refund policy raises the stakes of getting the deployment and module mix right.
