Overview

PagerDuty is an incident-response platform for coordinating operational problems from detection through resolution. It is best suited to teams that need formal on-call coverage and response workflows across several tools. Its breadth is compelling, but the free plan’s five-user and one-schedule caps make it a small-team starting point rather than a growth plan.

Key features

PagerDuty brings incident response, real-time collaboration, escalation policies, on-call scheduling, stakeholder updates, ChatOps actions and post-incident reviews into one workflow. That combination is more useful than alert routing alone for teams that need to coordinate responders, keep stakeholders informed and review incidents afterward.

AIOps is intended to reduce alerts and repetitive work, while PagerDuty Automation standardizes business and technical workflows across people, tools and systems. Those capabilities target teams with recurring response processes; the Reliability Platform plans also attach defined event and AI-action quotas, so capacity matters when choosing a tier.

PagerDuty lists more than 750 integrations, with connections through email, API or MCP. Examples include AWS, Slack, Anthropic Claude Connector, Microsoft Teams, Cursor and Datadog. That breadth can help teams coordinate across an existing tool stack. Its iOS and Android apps support incident response, schedules and overrides, incident context and automated response tasks; the apps are free to download but require a PagerDuty account.

The company was founded in 2009 and is based in San Francisco. It says 30,000 organizations use its platform and that it has more than 1,000,000 platform users. PagerDuty reports continuous systems monitoring, FedRAMP authorization at the Low baseline, completed SOC 2 Type II examinations and ISO 27001 certification for its services.

Pricing

PagerDuty offers a free plan, paid plans and a 14-day trial. The free Incident Management plan costs 0.00 USD per free, billed per year, and allows five users, one on-call schedule and one escalation policy. It includes basic chat and limited email, push, SMS and phone notifications. Knowledge Base and Community access are included, but Standard Email & Chat Support is not. This is a practical fit for a small team validating a basic response process, but the schedule and escalation caps will constrain teams covering multiple services or rotations.

Incident Management Professional is 2521.00 USD per month, billed at $25 per user / month monthly or $21 per user / month annually (16% off). It adds an enhanced chat experience and post-incident reviews; add-ons are purchased separately. Standard Email & Chat Support is included on this and higher plans. This is the clearer fit for teams that need richer collaboration and incident follow-up, though the annual rate requires an annual commitment and the displayed monthly price is $25 per user.

The PD Reliability Platform tiers use annual billing and specify seat and usage allowances. Starter costs 2800.00 USD per year for 10 seats, 5,000 Signal Intelligence Events and 5,000 AI actions. Essential costs 12000.00 USD per year for 20 seats, 40,000 Signal Intelligence Events and 50,000 AI actions. These fixed annual packages suit teams able to estimate their staffing and usage; Essential substantially raises the stated event and action allowances, while costing more than four times Starter. Ultimate has custom pricing and includes 500 seats and 2,000,000 Signal Intelligence Events; its plan summary does not show an AI-action amount. It is aimed at much larger deployments, but requires a custom quote.

Platforms

PagerDuty supports Android, iOS, API, self-hosted and web platforms. The mobile apps extend response work to phones, including schedule management and overrides, but an account is required to use them.

Who it's for

PagerDuty names developers, reliability engineers, customer success, security and C-suite teams among its users. It is a strong fit when incident response crosses teams or tools and requires defined schedules, escalation, automation and follow-up. A small group needing only a single rotation may find the free plan sufficient; organizations with many teams or high event volumes should weigh the paid tiers and their quotas.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 750 integrations and email, API and MCP connections support response workflows spanning many platforms.
Pro: Scheduling, escalation, stakeholder updates, ChatOps actions and post-incident reviews cover multiple stages of incident handling.
Pro: Mobile apps support response tasks and schedule changes away from a desktop.
Con: The free plan stops at five users, one schedule and one escalation policy, limiting its usefulness for expanding coverage.
Con: Professional add-ons cost extra, while Reliability Platform tiers impose distinct annual seat, event and AI-action allowances.

Verdict

Choose PagerDuty if your team needs a broad incident-response system that connects schedules, escalation, integrations and post-incident work. Its main advantage is the reach of that coordinated workflow; its main drawback is the combination of a tightly capped free plan and paid tiers with separate pricing, quotas and add-ons. Teams with simple coverage needs or a preference for a narrower tool should compare alternatives before committing.
