Overview

OpenRFID Middleware connects RFID readers to enterprise applications, including ERPs, warehouse systems and cloud APIs. It is a strong fit for technical teams integrating varied reader hardware into an existing stack. Its MIT-licensed code, filtering and outage buffering make a capable integration layer; teams should weigh that flexibility against the .NET prerequisite and absence of repository releases or packages.

Key features

Plugins and protocols cover LLRP, Impinj Octane, Zebra FX, Identium and Alien readers, as well as TCP/UDP sockets, serial connections and MQTT. That breadth can simplify mixed-reader integrations by providing a common bridge, though it is less compelling for buyers seeking a ready-packaged application rather than middleware to deploy and configure.

Filtering offers sliding-window and shift-based deduplication, RSSI thresholds, antenna masking and EPC pattern rules. These controls help suppress repeat or unwanted reads before forwarding events. HTTP dispatch supports GET, POST, PUT and PATCH, customizable headers, and Liquid or Handlebars templates for JSON, form-data, XML and CSV payloads. WebSockets and MQTT add other communication routes. This makes it adaptable to different receiving systems, while leaving the integration choices and setup to the team using it.

A persistent SQLite WAL queue holds tags during network outages and retransmits them when connectivity returns. Automatic reader reconnection with exponential backoff adds resilience at the reader connection as well. For operations, the dashboard, live tag telemetry, WebSocket logs, diagnostics and OpenAPI/Swagger management API provide visibility and control. API key authentication can be enabled with the ApiKey parameter; requests then need an X-API-Key header. Custom authorization tokens and static keys in HTTP headers are also supported, but the project does not state a security certification.

Pricing

OpenRFID Middleware is free: its OpenRFID Middleware plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is open-source under the MIT License. That removes a software license charge, and the stated capabilities include read-event analytics, movement history and API access. No seat, usage quota, trial period or renewal term is stated. The trade-off is deployment responsibility: local .NET CLI and Docker Compose are documented, with Docker optional, and the guide requires the .NET 10.0 SDK or a .NET 8.0+ compatible build target.

Platforms

The project lists API, Linux, self-hosted, web and Windows platforms. Local CLI and Docker Compose deployment give teams self-hosting paths, but the .NET requirement is a practical constraint for environments that cannot support it. The repository shows no releases or packages, so teams should expect to manage adoption without those distribution channels.

Who it's for

This middleware suits developers and integration teams connecting a range of RFID readers to upstream enterprise applications. It is especially relevant when filtering, multiple payload formats and buffering reads during network interruptions matter. It is not the best fit for organizations that need packaged releases, or for teams unwilling to take on a .NET-based deployment.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad reader and protocol support can accommodate mixed hardware through one integration layer.
Pro: Fine-grained filtering and templated dispatch help tailor events to upstream systems.
Pro: Persistent outage buffering and automatic reconnection address interruptions in network and reader connectivity.
Con: The .NET SDK or compatible build target narrows deployment options.
Con: No repository releases or packages makes this less direct to adopt than a product with packaged distribution.
Con: Authentication options are described, but no security certification is stated.

Alternatives

RFID Software is the broader category directory. For a different product, TagMatiks has a free plan and spans Android, iOS, web, Windows, API and self-hosted platforms; its Wedge Free plan caps scans at 500, while AT Lite Free caps active assets at 99. Choose it when those defined free-plan limits suit the use case better than an open-source middleware bridge.

AssetPulse is a paid alternative with a free trial and Android, iOS, web, API and self-hosted platforms. Senitron Athena is a paid option across Android, iOS, macOS, web, Windows, API and self-hosted platforms, with quote-based pricing. RFTrack offers paid On-Premise and On-Demand options with pricing not listed; its On-Premise plan is a perpetual license for physical servers, virtual servers or private cloud. Consider it when that licensing and installation model fits.

AMG Read Stream is a paid enterprise RFID inventory-tracking option for cloud or on-premises deployment, with platforms spanning Android, Linux, macOS, web, Windows, API and self-hosted. Nedap iD Cloud is another paid option, with Android, iOS, web and API platforms. RTI eP360 charges 0.01 USD per contact for eP360+, billed per successful asset trip; its plan describes high-volume customers, web and mobile access, premium reporting and optional ePOrchestrator. HID Approve is a paid authentication product for consumers and workforces, delivered through a mobile app or SDK on Android, iOS, macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Choose OpenRFID Middleware if your team needs a free, open-source bridge for diverse RFID readers, with configurable filtering, dispatch and resilience through outages. Its .NET requirement and lack of repository releases or packages are the main reasons to look elsewhere, particularly if you need a more packaged route to deployment.
