Overview

The product is built around a solar project's path from design to customer proposal and payment. Ada AI generates multiple system designs from design preferences in seconds, while branded proposals and payment tools keep sales work connected to project administration. That breadth makes OpenSolar a practical fit for teams seeking one workflow rather than a design-only tool.

The company is headquartered in Sydney, Australia. OpenSolar says solar industry veterans Adam Pryor and Andrew Birch started it in 2017; the product's founding date is 2019.

Key features

Design, proposals, and payments

Ada AI's fast generation of multiple designs can give teams alternatives to work from, though it does not remove the need to judge which system suits a project. Proposals can be customized with a business's branding, flexible payments, and real-time updates. Branded invoices, payment milestones, automated reminders, online payments, and e-signatures cover the transaction steps that follow. This combination should suit teams that want customer-facing sales and payment administration tied to solar work.

Equipment and project operations

Equipment ordering within the design experience and bill-of-materials generation from a hardware catalogue bring purchasing preparation close to system design. Site survey forms, design handoff, crew scheduling, and service visit tracking extend the workflow into field and service operations. These capabilities make OpenSolar broader than a proposal tool, although teams should assess whether its project workflow fits their own operations.

API and service assurances

The API connects OpenSolar with CRM, accounting, operations, and incentive tools, and supports project, design, pricing, hardware, and contact data. OpenSolar says it encrypts data at rest and in transit using TLS/SSL, applies role-based access controls, targets 99.95% service availability, and monitors systems around the clock. Its AWS production systems are in the Asia-Pacific Sydney region, with a global content delivery network. Free accounts include dedicated 24/7 support, live support, ticket-based help, training, webinars, and a Help Center.

Pricing

OpenSolar Pro

OpenSolar Pro costs 0.00 USD per free and is free of charge. It includes solar design, sales, and project management, making it the clear starting point for installers who want to adopt the core workflow without a subscription cost. The free plan makes the product unusually accessible, but teams that need API integration should budget separately rather than assume the free offer covers it.

OpenSolar API Access

API Access is a paid add-on with custom pricing: a geo-specific per-project fee applies when a project is created. It has a 30-day free trial, after which billing starts at the beginning of the closest month. This structure is worth considering for integration-led teams, but costs can scale with project creation and depend on region.

OpenSolar also describes a 30-day free trial. For API users, the trial and subsequent billing timing matter; the core Pro plan remains free of charge.

Platforms

OpenSolar supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, and API access. That range accommodates mobile and desktop use as well as integrations, though API Access has its own project-based fee.

Who it's for

Solar installers, sales teams, and energy professionals who want design, proposals, payments, equipment preparation, and project operations in one platform are the best fit. Pro is particularly compelling for teams prioritizing a no-cost core system. Businesses whose main requirement is connecting software through an API should evaluate project volume and the region-specific fee before committing.

Pros and cons

Pro is free of charge: Solar design, sales, and project management are available without a plan fee.
Work spans several project stages: Design, proposals, invoicing, equipment ordering, and field operations can sit in one workflow.
API costs are project-based: A geo-specific charge when a project is created may make integration costs less predictable as volume changes.
API billing follows a defined transition: The 30-day trial ends with billing starting at the beginning of the closest month, a timing detail API buyers should plan around.

Alternatives

For a wider set of solar installation software, compare products by workflow and pricing model. FieldExecutives may suit a small team looking for a free plan capped at two users, with paid Starter pricing of 1999.00 INR per month. SolarProjeX is a paid option with a free trial; its Starter plan is 149.00 USD per month for up to 5 users and 100 GB storage, which may appeal when those seat and storage limits fit the team.

MightyFields Solar may fit buyers who prefer a per-user subscription, though its minimum is 15 users. SolarIonix is another paid option with a free trial. SunrAI Project Management may suit teams interested in its Starter plan at 29.00 USD per month, described as planned launch pricing and free during beta, with up to 25 installs per month. Scoop Solar uses custom pricing based on modules, workflows, and installation or service volume, with unlimited users, storage, and devices.

SolarSAAS, SuryaHub, and FieldExecutives are further options to compare; the right choice depends on the specific workflow and platform fit a buyer needs.

Verdict

OpenSolar is a strong choice for solar professionals who want a free core platform spanning design, sales, payments, and project operations. The main reason to look elsewhere is API economics: its region-specific fee is charged per project, so integration-heavy teams should compare that model with their expected project flow before choosing.
