Overview

Offered by the Icecream Apps team since 2016, PDF Candy combines text editing, annotations, OCR, conversion and common file operations such as merging, splitting, compressing, signing and protecting PDFs. Its breadth is useful when document jobs vary; for a single recurring task, a focused tool may be simpler.

The company page lists 98 tools and support for 19 languages. AI tools can summarize, chat with and translate PDFs. Google Drive and Dropbox imports and exports support a cloud-based workflow, while a separate Windows download adds offline access.

Key features

Editing, conversion and AI

Text editing, annotation and OCR give the toolkit uses beyond changing file formats, while merge, split, compression and protection tools cover routine document handling. AI summarization, chat and translation add ways to work with a document’s contents. This range makes PDF Candy a practical general-purpose option, though its free limits may frustrate anyone who needs frequent processing or batch jobs.

Cloud and desktop workflows

Files can be imported from Google Drive and Dropbox and saved back after processing, avoiding an extra manual transfer in those workflows. PDF Candy Desktop has 35 tools and can operate offline, a useful distinction for Windows users who need to work without a connection. The desktop app is not offered for the other listed desktop platforms.

Privacy and security

PDF Candy says uploaded and created files are automatically deleted from its servers within two hours of processing. It also says transfers use HTTPS with TLS/SSL and that documents are protected with 256-bit AES encryption in transit and at rest. The company states that the platform complies with GDPR and uses ISO 27001-certified data centers.

Pricing

The free Web + Desktop Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free. It imposes page and hourly restrictions, limits file size and desktop operations, and does not include batch processing. It can suit occasional, small jobs, but those caps are a meaningful drawback for regular use.

Web Monthly costs 6.00 USD per month and includes web access, no hourly limits, tasks up to 500 MB and high-priority processing. It is the straightforward choice for people who want paid online access without an annual commitment, though it does not include desktop access.

Desktop + Web Yearly costs 4.00 USD per year and includes web and desktop access, no hourly limits, tasks up to 500 MB, high-priority processing, Video Candy WEB and Image Candy WEB. It is the broadest listed subscription package, but the stated yearly price is lower than the monthly web price; check the checkout terms carefully before choosing, since the plan is billed yearly.

Desktop + Web Lifetime costs 99.00 USD per month and is billed Pay once. It provides access to PDF Candy Web and Desktop, but permanent access is to a specific software version. That version restriction matters to buyers expecting ongoing access to future releases.

Students and teachers can get one year of online PRO at no cost, with no hourly limits and uploads up to 500 MB. It is a strong option for eligible education users, but it is an online offer rather than desktop access. PDF Candy offers a full refund within 30 days when recurring errors cannot be resolved within a reasonable period. Payments are processed by Paddle; technical support responds within two business days if the Help Center cannot resolve an order issue.

Platforms

PDF Candy supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. Its offline desktop app is specifically for Windows; the other listed platforms provide access without that desktop option.

Who it's for

PDF Candy is best for people who need a varied toolkit, cloud storage handoffs or offline PDF work on Windows. The education offer suits students and teachers with larger or repeated online tasks. Occasional users can start with the free plan, but people who process many files, need batch work or routinely handle large files should consider paid access. It is less compelling for someone who needs only one operation or requires a desktop app outside Windows.

Pros and cons

Broad toolkit: Editing, OCR, annotation, conversion and file-management tools reduce the need to switch between single-purpose services.
Useful workflow options: Google Drive and Dropbox connections, plus an offline Windows app with 35 tools, cover both cloud and disconnected work.
Free-plan friction: Page and hourly restrictions, limited file size, no batch processing and a desktop operations cap constrain regular use.
Lifetime version caveat: The one-time plan provides permanent access to a specific software version, not an unrestricted promise of future versions.

Alternatives

For a compression-only job, Xodo Compress PDF may be a better fit if its free online plan’s one low-compression action per day is enough; it also has a free trial and runs across more platforms, including browser extensions.

PDF2Go is another freemium option with access to most tools on its free plan, but limited file processing. Choose it if that broader free access better matches your needs.

PDF24 Compare PDF is a free alternative with no limits, registration or time restrictions, suited to readers who want that specific comparison tool without usage caps.

Smallpdf offers a 7-day free trial and 30+ tools, so it may suit someone who wants to try a broad toolset before committing.

PDFOptim is worth considering for a narrower, privacy-focused workflow: its free plan allows three operations per day, files up to 25 MB and private processing across four PDF tools.

AvePDF offers 50+ document tools, but its free plan is capped at two operations per six hours, 128 MB and ten files per processing. It may suit users whose tasks fit those limits.

iLovePDF is another freemium PDF toolkit with limited document processing on its free Basic plan.

Sejda PDF Editor offers a Web Week Pass with seven days of web access and no desktop access.

Verdict

Choose PDF Candy if you want one service for varied PDF jobs, cloud transfers and, on Windows, offline desktop work. Its breadth and education offer are the strongest reasons to pick it; the restricted free tier, Windows-only offline app and lifetime plan’s version limit are reasons to look elsewhere if your workload is frequent, platform-specific or demands guaranteed access to future releases.
