Overview

PDFix brings PDF remediation and standards validation into one workflow. Four auto-tagging methods—basic tagging, preflight-generated templates, AI-generated templates and predefined layout templates—give teams several ways to establish document structure. Users can then refine tables, headings and alternative text in the visual Accessibility Panel, with remediation guidance to support corrections.

The built-in veraPDF engine checks PDF/UA-1, PDF/UA-2, WCAG 2.1 and 2.2, Section 508 and the European Accessibility Act. Audit reports can be exported in HTML, XML or JSON, which gives compliance teams a portable record of validation. PDFix says validation is 100% local and documents are not uploaded to a server, a useful safeguard for sensitive files. Automated checks are not a substitute for judgment: PDFix says human checks and intervention are required for full compliance.

Key features

The tagging choices are useful for teams working with documents of different complexity: basic tagging offers a direct starting point, while generated and predefined templates suit more structured layouts. The Accessibility Panel provides a path to correct specific elements rather than relying on automation alone. Enterprise adds batch processing with layout templates, making it the better fit for recurring document workflows; that capability is not included in the listed Pro plan.

Marketplace actions connect PDFix Desktop with IBM Docling, Amazon Textract and OpenAI actions. External actions require Docker, so they add integration options but also a deployment requirement. The local-validation approach will appeal to organizations that keep documents on their own machines, while the need for human review remains material for any organization making compliance decisions.

Pricing

Desktop Lite has custom pricing. It provides PDF/UA validation, WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 checks, Section 508 and European Accessibility Act checks, veraPDF-powered validation, and support for Windows, macOS and Linux. It is the validation-focused choice for teams that do not need the listed remediation and conversion tools.

Desktop Pro costs 599.00 USD per year for an annual license under US customer pricing. It adds PDF remediation and accessibility fixes, AI-powered auto-tagging, custom actions, layout templates and PDF conversion. This is the clearest fit for individual practitioners or teams doing active remediation, though the listed plan is annual rather than monthly.

Desktop Enterprise costs 1000.00 EUR per year, per user. It includes all Pro features and batch processing, making the additional spend relevant to organizations handling recurring volumes or workflows. The per-user term matters when budgeting across a team.

The free download gives access to all features, but saved PDFs may contain redacted content and a watermark. That makes it useful for evaluation, not unrestricted production output. A free trial is also available.

Platforms

PDFix Desktop supports Linux, macOS and Windows. Its desktop availability is a practical advantage for organizations with mixed operating systems, though it is not a web-based workflow. Support is offered in Europe through support@pdfix.net, with a North America office and sales contact details.

Who it's for

PDFix is a strong candidate for accessibility specialists, compliance teams and document groups that need to remediate PDFs, validate against several standards and retain exportable audit reports. Enterprises and public-sector organizations may value local validation and Enterprise batch processing. Readers seeking a quick automated check with no desktop setup, or full compliance without human review, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Four auto-tagging approaches and manual controls for tables, headings and alternative text support a workflow that can move from automation to targeted correction.
Pros: Checks cover PDF/UA-1 and PDF/UA-2, WCAG 2.1 and 2.2, Section 508 and the European Accessibility Act, with reports exportable in three formats.
Pros: Local validation and no document upload, as stated by PDFix, suit sensitive-document workflows.
Cons: The free download can produce saved PDFs with redacted content and a watermark, limiting its use for finished deliverables.
Cons: Full compliance still requires human checks and intervention; automated validation alone is insufficient.
Cons: Batch processing is reserved for Enterprise, and external marketplace actions require Docker.

Alternatives

Choose Normfluss if a web or API-based option is preferable to a desktop application; its free check allows one PDF without an account. Adobe Scan is a mobile alternative for Android and iOS, rather than a cross-platform desktop remediation tool.

Grackle GO is worth considering for web or desktop validation with a free tier, but its free plan caps files at 25 MB and unauthenticated use at 10 validations per hour. PDFAccessibility.ai offers web and API access with a free tier of 10 accessible PDF exports, unlimited checks, uploads up to 10 MB and seven-day file retention.

DocAccessible may fit teams wanting a web or API service with a defined free allowance of three documents per month, two active Exchange cases, one website and 20 monitored PDFs, with files up to 10 MB. EqualWeb PDF Tools is another web and API alternative with credit-based plans.

Fruition PDF Accessibility offers web and API access, with a free tier of 10 pages per month for basic structural remediation. Nutrient DWS Accessibility API is a better match for API or self-hosted workflows; its free plan includes 20 auto-tagged pages and 100 validations per month.

Verdict

PDFix Desktop is the right choice for accessibility specialists and document teams that need a desktop remediation workflow, extensive standards checks and locally processed validation. The strongest reason to choose it is the combination of corrective tools and exportable audits across several standards. Look elsewhere if unrestricted production output must be free, if batch processing is needed without an Enterprise license, or if automation without human review is the goal.
