Overview

Windmill brings engineering, data, sales, support and marketing teams into a shared environment for building internal tools. Developers can write scripts in TypeScript, Python, Go, PHP, Bash, C#, SQL, Rust, Ruby and R, among other languages; colleagues can use low-code builders for flows and apps, or build interfaces with React or Svelte. That mix gives teams room to choose between code and visual construction, but it also means agreeing on the right approach for each project.

Windmill is open source and supports self-hosting, local development through its CLI, and Git sync for version control and deployment workflows. Those options suit teams that want control over how internal software is developed and deployed. Security-conscious teams should account for the defaults: PID namespace isolation is disabled, and NSJAIL sandboxing is optional.

Key features

Scripts, flows and triggers

Scripts and flows can run from webhooks, schedules, HTTP routes, queues or the open API. This supports both scheduled jobs and event-driven work without limiting teams to a single way of starting automation. Reusable workflows can help teams apply common processes across projects.

Builders and integrations

The script editor sits alongside a low-code flow builder and low-code, React and Svelte app builders. That range can bridge developer-led work and internal interfaces for other teams, though it is more useful when an organization is prepared to manage multiple development styles.

Windmill’s Hub includes more than 200 resource types, including GitHub, Slack, AWS, BigQuery and PostgreSQL integrations. Teams can also define custom resource types with fields and constraints in a schema, a practical option when a needed connector is not among the supplied choices.

Security and support

Enterprise features include granular permissions, RBAC, secret management, OAuth, SSO and audit logs. These controls address important governance needs, but they do not make isolation automatic: PID namespace isolation is off by default and NSJAIL is optional. The free self-hosted plan includes community support on Discord; Enterprise includes 24/7 priority support with a three-hour response time.

Pricing

Windmill uses a freemium model, with a free plan and Enterprise pricing from $120/mo. The free and open-source plan costs 0.00 USD per free, billed monthly, and includes three workspaces, 50 users, 10 GiB of workspace object storage and 100 guest app users per 30 days. Those caps make it a substantial starting point for small teams or evaluation, but teams exceeding any of them will need to consider a paid arrangement.

Enterprise costs 120.00 USD per month, billed from $120/mo. It adds Enterprise features, uncapped SSO (which requires seats), 24/7 priority support with a three-hour response time and a commercial licence. The Enterprise trial lasts a month. The plan’s starting price and seat requirement for SSO matter when estimating the cost of a larger deployment.

Platforms

Windmill supports web, API, Linux, Windows and self-hosted deployments. That combination accommodates browser-based access, API use and teams operating their own deployment, although the security settings for self-hosting need deliberate review.

Who it's for

Windmill is a strong fit for teams building internal software across engineering and operational functions, especially when they want scripts, workflows and interfaces in one platform. Its language coverage, custom resource types and Git-based development workflow suit teams with developers who can shape and maintain internal tooling. It is less compelling for buyers seeking a tightly bounded, turnkey automation product or teams unwilling to evaluate and configure isolation settings.

Pros and cons

Pro: Multiple languages and code, low-code and React or Svelte builders let teams match the implementation style to the work.
Pro: More than 200 Hub resource types plus schema-defined custom resources provide breadth for connecting internal systems.
Pro: The free plan permits 50 users across three workspaces, with 10 GiB of object storage and 100 guest app users per 30 days.
Con: PID namespace isolation is disabled by default, while NSJAIL sandboxing is optional, so security configuration needs attention.
Con: Enterprise SSO requires seats, and Enterprise starts at $120/mo, which teams should factor into a scaled rollout.

Alternatives

For teams comparing integration and automation tools, these options offer different trade-offs:

Knit is a freemium alternative with a 499.00 USD per month Start Up plan that includes 100K API calls/month, unlimited data usage, three test accounts and three-day log retention.
Celigo has a free plan limited to two endpoints, one flow and one production environment; its Standard plan includes 20 flows, three endpoints and 25 concurrency.
Apache NiFi is free to download under the Apache License, Version 2.0, with no commercial plan or usage limits stated on its official pages.
Google Cloud Application Integration offers a free tier with up to 400 integration executions and up to 20 GiB of data processed per month.
Apache Camel is a free option under the Apache License 2.0, with no cost forever.
Oracle Integration is a paid alternative with Standard, Enterprise and Standard BYOL plans.
WSO2 Integrator offers a 30-day free trial and is a paid option without a free plan.
Nango has a free plan with 10 connections, 10 hours of compute per month and 10GB of data transfer per month.

Readers can also compare the broader categories of API Integration Platforms, IT Orchestration Software, Workload Automation Software, Task Automation Software, Internal Tools Software and Workflow Orchestration Software.

Verdict

Choose Windmill if your team builds internal software and wants scripts, workflows and app creation alongside self-hosting and broad integration options. Its free limits make it practical to start, while Enterprise adds commercial licensing and priority support. Look elsewhere if your security requirements demand isolation by default or if you need a simpler, more narrowly scoped automation tool.
