Overview

Vital’s oscillators reshape wavetable harmonics by stretching, shifting, smearing and skewing them. That makes sound construction the center of the instrument, rather than browsing a broad collection of instrument types. Sample conversion, wavetable editing and text generation offer several ways to create source material, so Vital suits sound designers better than musicians looking for a general-purpose instrument library.

Key features

Wavetables can be made from samples using pitch-splice or vocode, edited directly, or generated from text. Text-to-wavetable is a web service with a five-request daily limit unless a plan unlocks unlimited use. That is enough room for occasional prompt experiments, but a regular text-driven workflow will need Pro or Subscription.

Modulation includes drag-and-drop routing, audio-rate modulation, stereo-splittable and keytracked LFOs, and custom envelope curves. Two routable voice filters and eight routable effects provide further sound shaping, while an oscilloscope and spectrum viewer help inspect the result. MPE and microtonal tuning files are useful for players with expressive controllers or nonstandard tuning setups.

VST, VST3, AU and LV2 formats make Vital available across common plugin environments. Its system requirements are 64-bit operation and OpenGL 3 or higher; supported systems are Windows 10+, macOS 10.15+ and Ubuntu Linux 18.04+.

Pricing

Basic is free and includes 75 presets, 25 wavetables and the full synth features. It is the clear starting point for anyone who wants Vital’s sound-shaping tools without paying, though its smaller included library and five daily text requests put limits on ready-made material and prompt-heavy use.

Plus costs 25 USD one-time and expands the library to 250 presets and 70 wavetables, while retaining the full synth features. It is the most direct upgrade for buyers who want more included sounds without a subscription. Pro costs 80 USD one-time, with 400+ presets, 150 wavetables and unlimited text-to-wavetable; it suits users who want both the largest stated library and unrestricted generation.

Subscription costs 5.00 USD per month, billed at $5 / month. It includes store credit, subscriber-only packs, unlimited text-to-wavetable and prioritized support through private Discord channels or the forum. This is the option for ongoing access to those benefits rather than a one-time purchase. Vital Audio says it does not sell user data and collects only what is needed to provide its services; payment details go directly to Stripe or PayPal, and authentication requests go to Firebase.

Platforms

Vital supports Linux, macOS and Windows, with minimum versions of Ubuntu Linux 18.04+, macOS 10.15+ and Windows 10+. The 64-bit and OpenGL 3-or-higher requirements may rule it out on older systems.

Who it's for

Choose Vital if you want a flexible wavetable synth, especially if you value modulation depth, custom wavetable creation, MPE or microtonal tuning. Basic makes it practical to start without a purchase. It is less suitable if your priority is a broad range of instrument families or if you need more than five daily text generations without paying.

Pros and cons

Pro: Basic includes full synth features, so the core instrument does not require a paid tier.
Pro: Multiple wavetable-creation methods and extensive modulation support give sound designers several routes to shape a sound.
Pro: Windows, macOS and Linux support, plus MPE and microtonal tuning files, cover varied setups and control approaches.
Con: Basic includes fewer presets and wavetables than Plus or Pro, and text generation is limited to five daily requests.
Con: Unlimited text generation requires Pro or Subscription, making frequent use a paid commitment.

Alternatives

Dexed is a free option for readers who want a no-cost instrument on Linux, macOS or Windows. Surge XT is another free, open-source virtual instrument plugin for those platforms.

IK Multimedia ReSing may suit readers seeking voice-focused tools: its free plan includes two voices and two instruments, while the paid plan is a one-time 129.99 USD purchase. Pianoteq is a paid alternative with an available trial and support for iOS as well as desktop systems.

BBC Symphony Orchestra is the more relevant choice for readers after orchestral instruments, with a free Discover edition. Repro is a paid alternative for buyers who want two synths in one product; it requires host software and its demo emits crackling sound.

EZmix 3 is a paid option for macOS and Windows with a trial, while XO is a paid option for those platforms with a trial and a stated collection of one-shot samples and beat presets. For broader browsing, see Virtual Instruments, Software Synthesizers and Sound Design Software.

Verdict

Vital is an easy recommendation for sound designers who want a capable wavetable synth without an upfront cost: Basic keeps the full synth features, and paid plans add larger libraries or unlimited text generation. Look elsewhere if you need a broader instrument library, or if the Basic text-generation cap is too restrictive and neither paid route fits your budget.
