Overview

Sibelius is professional music notation software for composers, arrangers, and educators working across desktop, mobile, and web. Its broad score-entry and teaching toolkit is a strong fit for people who need more than basic notation, though the right plan depends on staff and cloud-sharing limits.

Musicians can enter notes by MIDI, keyboard, or Apple Pencil, import existing MusicXML and MIDI files, and keep score parts synchronized. The range from a free introductory option to a perpetual Ultimate bundle gives buyers several ways in, but the Artist tier’s caps and Ultimate’s higher recurring price make plan choice consequential.

Key features

Score creation and exchange

Sibelius supports MusicXML, MIDI, and tablature, and imports MusicXML and MIDI while preserving performance data. That makes it useful for moving existing material into a score workflow without discarding performance information. AI chord suggestions generate and complete chord symbols, a focused aid for chord-based writing rather than a substitute for broader composition decisions.

Dynamic parts synchronize edits between a score and its parts, reducing the risk that a change in one leaves related materials out of step. Support for VST3 and AU virtual instruments broadens playback options for users with compatible instruments.

Sharing and teaching

Cloud publishing provides a private dashboard where scores can be viewed and played in a browser. Artist limits cloud sharing to 20 scores, while Ultimate allows unlimited cloud sharing; frequent publishers will therefore find the lower tier restrictive sooner.

For educators, classroom management supports sharing files and directing student focus from a workstation. More than 1,700 built-in projects, exercises, and resources give teachers material to draw on, and network or Team licensing is available for students. These classroom tools make Sibelius more compelling for teaching than a notation-only workflow.

Pricing

Sibelius has a free plan, but no price is stated for Sibelius First. It is positioned as free notation software for people new to notation, making it a sensible starting point before committing to a paid tier.

Sibelius Artist costs 79.00 USD per year, billed annually at $79, with 20% off new purchases and renewal at standard pricing. It includes desktop and mobile access, up to 24 staves per score, and cloud sharing for 20 scores. Limited symbols, lines, and text styles are the trade-off; it suits individual writers whose scores stay within those boundaries.

Sibelius Ultimate costs 159.00 USD per year, billed annually at $159, with 20% off new purchases and renewal at standard pricing. It removes the staff and cloud-sharing caps and adds complete engraving features, video sync and timecode support, and an educational worksheet creator. This is the more suitable subscription for large scores, extensive publishing, or advanced engraving and teaching needs.

The Ultimate Perpetual Bundle costs 899.00 USD one time and includes a perpetual license, unlimited staves and cloud sharing, complete engraving features, video sync and timecode support, plus PhotoScore Ultimate and AudioScore Ultimate. It is for buyers who prefer a lifetime purchase and expect to use the full feature set; its upfront cost is substantial compared with the annual options. Displayed prices exclude VAT and applicable taxes.

Platforms

Sibelius supports desktop, mobile, and web, with device support for Mac, PC, iPad, iPhone, and Chromebook. That breadth suits users moving between computer-based score work and mobile entry or browser-based viewing. Note entry includes Apple Pencil alongside MIDI and keyboard input.

Who it's for

Sibelius is best suited to composers and arrangers who need score-and-parts coordination, varied input methods, file interchange, or extensive cloud sharing. Educators also have a strong case for it because of classroom management, student licensing, and the built-in teaching library. A newcomer who only needs basic notation may be better served by starting with the free Sibelius First option; writers with modest scores may find Artist’s 24-staff and 20-score limits adequate.

Pros and cons

Pros: MusicXML and MIDI import preserves performance data, while dynamic parts keep score materials synchronized.
Pros: Classroom controls, student licensing, and more than 1,700 teaching resources support structured instruction.
Pros: Ultimate offers unlimited staves and cloud sharing, and the perpetual bundle adds PhotoScore Ultimate and AudioScore Ultimate.
Cons: Artist caps scores at 24 staves and cloud sharing at 20 scores, which can constrain larger or more active projects.
Cons: Ultimate’s annual cost is higher than Artist’s, while the perpetual bundle requires 899.00 USD upfront.
Cons: Artist has limited symbols, lines, and text styles, so users needing complete engraving features must move up to Ultimate.

Alternatives

Flat is worth considering for a free-plan user who wants real-time collaboration and MIDI-device transcription; its Flat Basic plan limits users to 15 scores.

Fender Notion offers a free plan with unlimited staves, full editing, and cross-platform notation and tablature, making it a relevant option for someone who prioritizes those capabilities without a paid entry tier.

MuseScore Studio is a free, open-source choice for users on Linux, macOS, or Windows who want software without limitations or an account or subscription.

Noteflight is browser-only and has no free plan, but its Premium Monthly option costs 7.95 USD per month and includes unlimited scores, making it an alternative for web-focused users willing to pay monthly.

Dorico is an iOS alternative with a free plan; its Elements 6 price is shown in a localized currency rather than USD.

LilyPond is free software for Linux, macOS, and Windows, suited to readers seeking a no-cost desktop option.

Denemo is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows, released under the GPL.

ScoreCloud offers a free plan capped at 10 songs online with watermarked printing, plus a Plus tier at 5.99 USD per month; it is a candidate for users drawn to notating from singing.

Verdict

Choose Sibelius if you need professional notation that connects scores, parts, sharing, and teaching in one cross-device workflow. The decisive reason to pay for Ultimate is its uncapped staves and cloud sharing alongside complete engraving; look elsewhere if your needs are basic or you prioritize a free desktop tool, since Sibelius’s higher tiers carry meaningful limits or cost.
