Overview

Unity Version Control is an engine-agnostic source-control system for game teams managing code alongside large files and binaries. It suits studios where developers and artists need to work against the same project through different workflows. Its cloud seats are free and unlimited, but storage and egress limits matter; self-hosting brings a per-seat charge.

Key features

Developers can choose centralized or distributed workflows with branching and merging, while artists can use file-based workflows. Native large-file handling, file locking, and sparse checkout address common needs in asset-heavy repositories; Smart Locks add a useful safeguard by checking that a user has the latest version before granting a lock. These capabilities make it a more natural fit for mixed code-and-asset work than a tool aimed only at code, though they do not remove the need to manage repository size and transfer use.

Teams can run Unity-hosted cloud servers or deploy the server on their own infrastructure. Unity names JIRA, Rider, TeamCity, Jenkins, Bamboo, Unreal Engine, and Discord among its integrations and supported tools. Access control lists and permissions apply to repositories, branches, and individual items. Upload and download connections use SSL, and Unity says it allows only SSL connections. Support includes email response in less than 24 hours, remote help for complex problems, and priority for development-team code hotfixes.

Pricing

The Free tier costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited cloud seats, 25 GB of storage per organization per month, and 100 GB of egress per month. It is a compelling starting point for teams that fit within those organization-wide quotas; usage beyond included limits is pay-as-you-go, so high asset or transfer volume can change the cost.

Unity Version Control hosted cloud is also 0.00 USD per free, with 25 GB of included storage per organization per month and unlimited hosted cloud seats. The seat allowance removes a per-user barrier, but does not increase the storage quota. Pay-as-you-go has custom pricing and retains 25 GB of free organization storage and 100 GB of free monthly egress.

On-prem seats cost 38.00 USD per month, billed at $38 per seat. That makes self-hosting an option for teams that need their own infrastructure, but its recurring per-seat price contrasts sharply with hosted cloud's unlimited seats. A user counts as active in a month after writing to a repository or uploading or downloading 5 MB of data.

Platforms

Desktop clients are available for Windows, macOS on Apple Silicon or Intel, and Linux. The platform coverage also includes web, API, and self-hosted deployment, giving teams several ways to fit the service into their environment.

Who it's for

Unity Version Control is best suited to game-development teams with large repositories that need both code-oriented branching and file-based artist workflows, particularly when unlimited hosted seats are useful. Teams with modest storage and egress needs can start on the free hosted tier. Those requiring self-hosting should weigh the per-seat fee, while teams whose work does not benefit from large-file and artist-oriented workflows may find a more specialized alternative a better fit.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited hosted cloud seats at no charge make it practical to include a whole development team without a cloud seat bill.
Pro: Centralized and distributed workflows, file-based work, native large-file handling, locking, and sparse checkout cover code and game assets in one system.
Pro: Cloud and self-hosted deployment, granular permissions, and named integrations offer meaningful options for different team setups.
Con: The free cloud allowance is limited to 25 GB of storage and 100 GB of monthly egress per organization, which can constrain large projects or frequent transfers.
Con: On-prem seats cost $38 per seat per month, so self-hosting can become costly as a team grows.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison of game-focused options, browse Game Version Control Software. Teams primarily seeking a marketplace or asset library can compare Game Asset Marketplaces and 3D Asset Libraries; these are adjacent categories rather than direct substitutes. For general source-control choices, see Version Control Software.

Choose Bitbucket Pipelines instead if its free plan's up-to-five-user limit, unlimited public and private repositories, 1 GB LFS storage, and 50 build minutes per month better match a small team that wants build minutes alongside repository hosting. Anchorpoint is worth considering for a single user doing non-commercial work: its free Personal plan includes GitHub Git, local Git, a file browser, and a Python API.

SmartGit is an option for personal, non-commercial use with a free feature set except enterprise integrations. VisualSVN Server may suit a Windows-focused self-hosted team: its free Community plan allows unlimited repositories and up to 15 users, including commercial use. GitKraken Desktop is an alternative.

GitLab Package Registry may suit teams seeking a registry-oriented option, with its free plan capped at five users per top-level group, 400 compute minutes monthly, and 10 GiB adjustable storage. Codeberg is a free alternative for projects that fit its 750 MiB Git storage and 1.5 GiB packages, LFS, and attachment allowance. Fossil is another free, self-hosted option.

Teams working primarily with audio middleware or profiling can browse Game Audio Middleware and Game Profiling Software.

Verdict

Choose Unity Version Control if your game team needs one system for code and large assets, with different workflows for developers and artists and the option of unlimited-seat hosted cloud. The free cloud seat model is its clearest advantage; organization-wide storage and egress caps are the main constraint, and self-hosting is less attractive when the $38-per-seat monthly charge adds up. Look elsewhere if those quotas or on-prem costs do not suit your project.
