Overview

Install a JAR on a supported server and explored chunks appear as players move through the world; the embedded web server serves the map to a browser. Vanilla clients need no additional mod, which keeps access simple for players. This is a live, 2D map rather than an offline viewer, so it is aimed at active servers, not people who want to inspect a world independently of its server.

Rendering takes care not to load chunks just to produce a full map: region files are read on worker threads, while live world access uses budgeted chunk snapshots. That is a useful design for server operators concerned about rendering work interfering with play, though the project does not provide a performance guarantee.

Key features

Viewers can toggle overlays for claims, player positions, markers and Waystones. Claim layers integrate with FTB Chunks, Open Parties and Claims, Common Protection API providers, and GriefPrevention on Spigot or Paper; JSON import provides another way to supply claim data. Waystones integration is optional on Fabric, Quilt and NeoForge, and LuckPerms can provide command permission nodes.

Privacy controls include disabling or rounding player positions; invisible players and spectators are hidden by default. The documented player payload excludes health, inventory, chat and IP data, a sensible boundary for a map that may be visible beyond the server community. Operators can also use manual block-color overrides; the project scans installed mod JARs at startup to resolve colors from textures.

The documented read-only HTTP endpoints expose world and status data, player data and map tiles, with versioned overlay endpoints and optional Prometheus metrics. An experimental mod API lets other mods provide block colors, hide players, respond to scan or tile-render events, and read documented endpoints. These are useful extension points for technically capable server owners, but the experimental status makes the API a less dependable foundation for essential integrations.

Pricing

The Explorer’s Friend costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan includes a MIT-licensed server-side map mod or plugin, live updates, dimension maps, a 2D view and markers and waypoints. There is no free trial because the plan is free; no seat or usage quota is stated. That makes it a straightforward choice for operators who need a live map, but it does not include offline viewing or built-in account management.

Platforms

The software is available for API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows environments. Server support covers Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, Spigot and Paper, with different artifacts depending on server platform and Minecraft version, so operators need to match the download to their setup. Forge is not shipped. On Paper/Bukkit 26.x, biome tints use defaults because Minecraft 26.x removed world-generation JSONs from the server and client JARs.

Who it's for

This fits server owners who want a browser-accessible map that updates as players explore, especially when a vanilla-client audience and claim overlays matter. It is less suitable for operators who need a packaged authentication system, reverse-proxy sub-path support, Forge support or offline map viewing. The embedded server binds to 127.0.0.1 by default and restricts request methods and connections, but it has no account system; the project recommends a reverse proxy for public maps, so access control remains the operator’s responsibility.

The project says its only optional outbound connection is a one-time download of the official vanilla client JAR, verified by SHA-1, and that it does not upload data. The repository is MIT-licensed, and issues are processed every Wednesday.

Pros and cons

Pros: Players can use a vanilla client, avoiding a client-mod requirement.
Pros: Toggleable claim, player, marker and Waystone layers suit servers with different mapping needs.
Pros: Position controls and hidden-by-default invisible players and spectators give operators practical privacy options.
Cons: No built-in accounts means public access needs an operator-managed reverse proxy and access controls.
Cons: No Forge support rules it out for servers committed to that platform.
Cons: No offline viewing limits its use to live server mapping rather than standalone world inspection.

Alternatives

For Bedrock Edition world rendering, consider Bedrock Viz, a free tool for Minecraft Bedrock Edition worlds. Choose BedrockMap if uploaded-world rendering is a better fit: its free plan permits one world upload, a 1500x1500 block render area, two renders per day, three zoom levels and public sharing links.

BlueMap is another free option for Java Edition worlds; its server plugin or mod requires Java 25+, while its standalone CLI documentation lists Java 21+. For Anvil-format worlds where Minecraft 1.6 resource packs are acceptable, Mapcrafter is free and GPL-licensed.

Other free alternatives include Tectonicus, uNmINeD, Chunkmap and mcmap. Browse the Minecraft World Map Viewers list for more options, or the File Manager Software list for a different category.

Verdict

Choose The Explorer’s Friend if you run a supported Minecraft server and want a free, live browser map with useful overlays and no client-mod requirement. Its strongest case is the combination of server-side rendering and configurable map layers; its main caveat is that public access security is yours to provide. Look elsewhere if you need Forge, offline viewing or built-in authentication.
