In their own words
Podcastfy
Podcastfy is a free, open-source Python package that turns multimodal source material into multilingual audio conversations with generative AI. It accepts websites, PDFs, images, YouTube videos, raw text, transcript files and user-provided topics; topic generation can use grounded real-time web search. Users can set the podcast format, style, voices, language and structure, then generate short episodes of 2–5 minutes or longform episodes of 30 minutes or more. Transcript generation supports more than 100 language-model options, including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google models. Listed speech engines include OpenAI, Google, ElevenLabs and Microsoft Edge. Local language models are supported for transcript generation, offering the project’s stated privacy and control benefits. Usage is available through a Python package, command-line interface and beta FastAPI service for URLs, with MP3 audio export. API-key needs depend on selected models; a documented local-model and Edge TTS setup requires none. Python 3.11 or higher and ffmpeg are required. The project uses the Apache 2.0 license.
Tider
Tider turns PDFs, articles, and personal documents into podcast-style audio on Mac or iPhone; it also makes audiobooks in the cloud. Sources can include PDFs, DOCX files, URLs, and RSS feeds. Episodes can use a single narrator or a host-and-guest format, with controls for narrator persona, audience, tone, pacing, and focus areas. Podcasts and summaries are generated on-device and can work offline after the language and voice models have been downloaded. Tider can also follow RSS feeds and URLs, crawl them, and convert them into an audio queue. Its Free plan costs nothing and includes unlimited on-device podcasts and summaries, unlimited cloud audiobooks, source imports, and plans saved locally. Audiobooks are generated on Tider’s servers. Tider says documents, scripts, and generated audio are processed and stored locally rather than uploaded; Pro cloud sync stores saved plans across Mac and iPhone, not documents or audio. Downloads are listed for macOS, Linux, and iPhone. Tider says it receives an email address when a user creates an account or enables Pro cloud sync, and holds no personal data if the user never signs in.
