Overview

Qualtrics is a survey and experience-management platform for individuals, research teams, and organizations running complex programs. Its breadth of survey logic, question formats, and analysis makes it a strong fit for structured research; the free account works best for smaller projects rather than sustained high-volume work.

Its XM Data & AI platform brings experience data together with human context to inform decisions. Qualtrics has operated since 2002, and enterprises, governments, and healthcare organizations use it for sensitive programs.

Key features

Survey logic is a notable strength: even the free account supports skip, display, and branch logic. That gives an individual researcher useful control over respondent paths, though the free tier’s eight question types leave less room for varied formats than paid plans. Strategic Research expands the choice to 23 types, including video and audio responses.

Paid plans also include more than 20 guided research solutions. Surveys support more than 70 languages, while dashboards support 24, so multilingual collection reaches further than multilingual reporting. Advanced analysis includes crosstabs, statistical tools, and generative-AI summaries of video responses. Exports in CSV, TSV, Excel, SPSS, and other formats support teams that continue analysis elsewhere. Simulation, prediction, and trusted-outcome actions broaden the platform beyond survey collection.

Response analytics and a respondent panel round out the research toolkit. The survey API is available, which is relevant for teams integrating survey work into other systems.

Pricing

Qualtrics Surveys Free: Free. This is an individual account with one user, three active surveys, 30 questions per survey, 500 total responses, and eight question types. It requires no credit card. The 500-response ceiling makes it suitable for modest projects, but not a large ongoing program.

Strategic Research: 420.00 USD per month, billed $5,040 USD billed annually for 1,000 responses shared across all users. The small-team plan supports unlimited users, surveys, and questions per survey, and provides 23 question types. Its shared response allowance is the key constraint: teams gain breadth in seats and survey design, but still need to manage a common 1,000-response pool.

Strategic Research Custom: custom pricing based on interactions, for enterprise organizations needing higher volumes. It includes 5,000 or more responses, 23 question types, unlimited users, surveys, and questions per survey. This is the more appropriate tier for larger programs, though interaction-based pricing makes the cost dependent on scale.

A 30-day Strategic Research trial provides access to most premium features, with some restrictions. Without an upgrade, it automatically downgrades to the free account after 30 days.

Platforms

Qualtrics is available through its API. That suits teams connecting surveys to software workflows; readers seeking a stated mobile or web platform should compare alternatives whose platform coverage matches their needs.

Who it's for

Qualtrics suits researchers, academics, and small teams that need branching surveys and room to grow into richer question formats. Its free tier is useful for limited individual work, while the Strategic Research plan makes collaboration practical through unlimited users. Enterprises, governments, and healthcare organizations running sensitive or higher-volume programs are better matched to the custom plan’s expanded response capacity.

It is less compelling for users who need a low-cost option with a larger response allowance: the free account stops at 500 responses, and the paid online plan’s 1,000 responses are shared across users.

Pros and cons

Strong survey control on the free tier: Skip, display, and branch logic are included, alongside 30 questions per survey.
Collaboration without seat limits on paid plans: Strategic Research includes unlimited users, surveys, and questions per survey.
Deep research toolkit: Paid plans add 23 question types, guided solutions, advanced analysis, and flexible data exports.
Free capacity is bounded: One user, three active surveys, and 500 total responses restrict sustained or team use.
Paid response volume is shared: Strategic Research’s 1,000-response allowance applies across all users, so collaboration does not multiply capacity.
Custom pricing depends on interactions: Higher-volume organizations must weigh a scale-based custom plan rather than a fixed published price.

Alternatives

For a survey-first alternative with a lower stated paid entry price, QuestionPro has a free Essentials tier with one user, 200 responses per survey, and 30 question types, plus an Advanced plan at 99.00 USD per month billed annually. Its free tier allows fewer responses per survey than Qualtrics’ 500 total, but more question types.

Choose Checkbox Voice of Customer when response volume and explicit per-user tiers matter more: its Solo plan is 30.00 USD per month for one user and 120,000 responses per year, while Team is 100.00 USD per month for 300,000 responses per year. It has no free plan.

Clootrack is another paid option, with custom pricing based on data volume and integrations and no per-seat user limits.

For session replay or product analytics rather than Qualtrics’ survey-led research, consider Fullstory, which has a free plan with 30,000 sessions, 10 user seats, and one-year retention for session replay and product analytics.

Glassbox, Alida, Contentsquare, and Quantum Metric are other options to compare.

Verdict

Choose Qualtrics if you need survey logic, a broad paid question set, and analysis tools that can support research from a solo project to a sensitive enterprise program. Its strongest case is the combination of flexible survey design and scale-ready plans; look elsewhere if your priority is more responses for a predictable low price, since the free and online plans impose firm shared caps and enterprise pricing varies with interactions.
