Overview

PromptWizard runs a feedback loop: it generates prompt variations, scores them, critiques their results, and refines the instructions over successive rounds. It can optimize examples alongside prompts and synthesize task-relevant examples, which makes it more useful for structured evaluation than for quickly drafting a standalone prompt.

Workflows can start without examples, use synthetic examples, or draw on training data. The framework can generate chain-of-thought reasoning for in-context examples, with a setting to turn that off and reduce prompt length or token use. Generated prompts are often detailed, so human supervision can help bring them closer to a specific task.

Key features

Prompt and example optimization

Scoring and critique give prompt refinement a task-oriented feedback loop rather than leaving changes to intuition alone. Optimizing demonstrations at the same time as instructions is a particular advantage for tasks where examples matter. The trade-off is that useful results depend on having a way to evaluate the task and, for custom data, the functions and configuration to support it.

Dataset workflows

The documented datasets are GSM8k, SVAMP, AQUARAT, and Instruction Induction (BBII). Custom datasets use JSONL samples with question and answer fields, but also require dataset-specific answer extraction and evaluation functions, plus configuration and data files. That flexibility suits teams able to adapt the evaluation path; it is extra engineering for anyone hoping to point the framework at arbitrary data and proceed unchanged.

Model access and runtime

Setup supports OpenAI API keys and Azure OpenAI endpoints. The project is installed from its GitHub repository as a Python package in development mode, with setup instructions for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Optimization averaged around 20–30 minutes in the documented experiments on the supported datasets, with duration varying by dataset, so this is a deliberate refinement workflow rather than an instant suggestion tool.

PromptWizard is MIT-licensed open-source software. Its security policy directs vulnerability reports to the Microsoft Security Response Center; no particular security controls or compliance certifications are stated.

Pricing

The MIT-licensed open-source software plan is free. There are no paid plans; model API access requires OpenAI or Azure OpenAI credentials, so the software itself is free while use of those services is separate. This suits teams comfortable managing model access and setup, but the free price does not remove the work of preparing data and evaluation logic.

Platforms

PromptWizard supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, and Windows use. The installation path is a Python development-mode package install, with operating-system setup instructions for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The API and self-hosted options suit technical teams integrating the framework into their own environment, rather than users looking for a browser-based product.

Who it's for

PromptWizard is a good fit for developers and researchers who can provide task data, configure evaluation, and review generated prompts. Teams comparing prompt variants or improving examples alongside instructions get the clearest benefit. It is a weaker choice for people who want a polished hosted interface, turnkey custom-dataset support, or prompt generation without model credentials and task-specific setup.

Pros and cons

Pro: Prompt and example optimization in one feedback loop helps when task performance depends on both instructions and demonstrations.
Pro: Workflows can use no examples, synthetic examples, or training data, with reasoning generation optional to manage prompt length and token use.
Pro: MIT licensing and a free plan allow teams to use the framework without a software subscription.
Con: Custom datasets require answer extraction and evaluation functions as well as configuration and data files, so adaptation takes task-specific work.
Con: OpenAI or Azure OpenAI credentials are required for model access, and optimization can take around 20–30 minutes on average in the documented experiments.
Con: Generated prompts can be detailed enough that supervision remains useful for tuning them to the task.

Alternatives

For a broader set of options, see AI Prompt Generators.

Vellum is the better direction if you want a freemium tool spanning web, mobile, browser extension, and self-hosted platforms; its free plan includes initial tasks and pay-as-you-go credits.
Promptitude may suit teams seeking a web or API service with a free tier capped at two users, five prompts, two assistants, one flow, one tool, 100 generations per month, and 200 tool calls per month.
Google Cloud Agent Evaluation is worth considering if you need paid evaluation by usage rather than a free open-source optimization framework; it offers a free trial and charges by input and output characters for computation-based metrics, with model-based metrics charged separately.
Agenta is an alternative for teams wanting a web, API, or self-hosted option: its free Hobby plan allows two team members, 5,000 agent runs per month, 20 evaluations per month, and one-week trace retention.
OpenPrompt is another free, self-hostable Python framework if prompt-learning is the priority; its tested requirements include Python 3.8+ and PyTorch 1.8.1+.
Promptotype is a web-based option if you want a prompt engineering playground with query testing against expected results and code generation from playground input.
VantagePrompt may fit users who prefer a web tool with monthly free credits, economy models, request limits, and seven-day history over a Python framework they install themselves.
Latitude is a web, API, or self-hosted alternative whose free Starter plan includes 20K credits per month, 30-day data retention, unlimited seats, and general-channel Slack support.

Verdict

Choose PromptWizard if you can supply task data, evaluation logic, and model credentials and want to optimize examples as well as prompts without paying for the framework. Its main advantage is that iterative scoring and critique make refinement task-aware; its main reason to look elsewhere is the setup and supervision required, especially for custom datasets.
