Overview

Rclone is a free, open-source command-line tool for managing files across cloud storage, with API and scripting access for automated workflows. It is best for technically confident users who need to move, synchronise, back up, or mount data across providers. Its range of operations is a compelling reason to choose it; the experimental web GUI makes it a weaker fit for anyone seeking a polished desktop file manager.

Key features

Support for more than 70 cloud storage products—including Amazon S3, Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, and Backblaze B2—makes rclone useful for connecting services without relying on each provider’s own utility. It can copy changed files, run one-way sync, and use bisync for two-way synchronisation. Hash checks using MD5 and SHA1, timestamp preservation, and restartable operations help with dependable backups, restores, and migrations. Where the providers support it, server-side transfers reduce local bandwidth and move data without using local disk.

Rclone can mount local, cloud, or virtual filesystems as disks, and serve files over SFTP, HTTP, WebDAV, FTP, and DLNA. Virtual backends can encrypt, compress, chunk, hash, or combine remotes. Shell pipelines, dry runs, scripts, and an API extend its usefulness in automated setups, but the command-line focus puts it at a disadvantage for people who prefer a graphical file manager. The web-based GUI is experimental.

The crypt remote encrypts file contents locally before upload and decrypts them after download. It encrypts file and directory names by default, though names can be left unencrypted. Encryption uses NaCl SecretBox based on XSalsa20 and Poly1305. Crypt does not conceal file length or modification time, and the password in the configuration file is only lightly obscured; enable configuration encryption if that file cannot be kept secure. This is useful protection for stored content, but it is not a way to hide all metadata or to leave credentials unprotected.

Pricing

Rclone is a free open-source project, with the listed plan priced at 0.00 USD per free. There is no free trial because the project is free to use. The plan includes its file-management capabilities without a paid tier; business sponsorship can include support contracts, advertising deals, and consultancy.

Platforms

Rclone provides builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Plan 9, and Solaris, with Android builds that are not yet first-class. Its minimum requirements for release v1.75.1 are Linux kernel 3.2, macOS 12 Monterey, and Windows 10 or Server 2016. It can mount filesystems on Windows, macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD. Despite Android support, rclone has no mobile app.

Who it's for

Rclone suits administrators, developers, and other users comfortable with command-line tools who need repeatable transfers or storage operations across providers. It is also a strong fit when mounting remote storage, scripting backups, or moving data between compatible services matters more than a conventional desktop interface. The volunteer-maintained project has a support forum and community; business sponsorship may include support contracts or consultancy. Users who need a polished GUI or want encryption to conceal file lengths and modification times should consider another approach.

Pros and cons

Broad provider coverage: More than 70 storage integrations can bring varied cloud services into one workflow.
Flexible transfer and sync: Changed-file copies, one-way sync, and two-way bisync cover different migration and backup needs.
Efficient transfers where supported: Server-side operations can reduce local bandwidth and avoid local-disk routing.
Automation and mounting: Scripts, API access, dry runs, pipelines, disk mounts, and file serving suit technical workflows.
Command-line emphasis: The experimental web GUI is not a substitute for a mature graphical file manager.
Crypt leaves metadata exposed: File length and modification time remain visible, and the configuration password needs additional protection.

Alternatives

For a more provider-limited free option, Air Explorer’s Free BASIC plan allows one account per cloud and read-only cloud-to-cloud sync or transfer, with two simultaneous downloads and uploads. Air Live Drive may suit users who want a capped free mounting option: Basic allows one drive per cloud and a maximum of three drives, while its 1 Year plan costs 17.00 USD per year. ExpanDrive offers a free personal-use plan for up to 10 users or devices per year, with 15 cloud services and protocols and community support; it is an option for users who prefer its supported service set.

CloudDrive2’s free Basic plan is a fit for users who can work within two cloud drives, one local mount, and up to two devices online at once. RaiDrive has a free Standard plan and a separate Education 2024 plan for accredited institutions, with eight drives, advertisements, and forum support. FolderSync is an alternative for Android users; its free Android app includes ads. Cyberduck is a GPL-licensed alternative for macOS and Windows, with a registration-key contribution shown at 10.00 USD per month. FileX is another free option for Linux, macOS, Windows, web, API, and self-hosted platforms.

For narrower needs, WebDAV client software is worth considering when WebDAV access is the priority, while cloud backup services and file transfer services offer alternatives for those seeking those specific categories.

Verdict

Choose rclone if you need a free, scriptable way to manage files across a wide range of cloud providers, especially for transfers, sync, mounts, and automation. Its breadth and server-side transfer support are the main reasons to use it. Look elsewhere if you need a polished graphical interface or expect crypt to conceal file metadata and secure its configuration password without additional steps.
