In their own words
Revise
Revise is a browser-based AI document editor and word processor, offered through web, API, and self-hosted options. Its AI agent can brainstorm, draft, edit, rewrite, and search the web for citations, presenting proposed changes for review. AI edits appear as tracked changes that users can accept or reject individually. The editor supports DOCX, PDF, Markdown, and text files, with export to DOCX, PDF, and Markdown. Revise supports models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and xAI, plus real-time collaboration and focused document comment threads. ChatGPT and Claude plugins use the customer’s subscriptions, while an SDK connects external agents through MCP. Documents and AI conversations are described as private by default, encrypted in transit and at rest, and deletable by the user. The Free plan costs $0 per month and includes a daily AI limit. Plus costs $8 per month, Pro $20 per month, and Max $80 per month. The API is billed per request, with 18 MiB uploads and PDFs up to 100 pages.
Vale
Vale is an open-source command-line linter that checks prose against style-guide rules. It runs offline as a single binary, without an account, server, or model. Supported markup includes Markdown, AsciiDoc, reStructuredText, MDX, MyST, Quarto, Typst, HTML, XML, DITA, Org, and QDoc. It can extract and check comments in 19 programming languages, and Vale Views can target content in OpenAPI, Jupyter notebooks, commit messages, transcripts, docstrings, JSON, YAML, and TOML. Users can write custom rules in YAML and choose which rules and style packages apply. Ready-made packages include Google, Microsoft, Red Hat, readability, and Harper grammar styles. Integrations span editors including VS Code, Cursor, Neovim, JetBrains IDEs, and Obsidian, as well as GitHub Actions and pre-commit hooks. Its language server offers autocomplete, diagnostics, hover popups, and quick fixes. Only error-level alerts cause a non-zero exit code in CI; warnings and suggestions pass. The free plan is MIT-licensed; paid plans start at $19/user/mo.
