Overview

SafetySkills Direct gives administrators a place to add learners, assign training, and monitor progress. Its catalog spans topics from office ergonomics to weapons of mass destruction and industries including defense and pharmaceuticals. That breadth can serve organizations with varied training requirements, though language coverage varies by course.

SafetySkills was created in 2007 by GBK, whose EHS and emergency-response training work dates to 1993. The company says its instructional design team reviews courses in response to regulatory and industry changes, including OSHA, DOT, and EPA updates.

Key features

Assignments and completion tracking

Courses require learners to complete tasks and answer questions correctly before completion. That competency-based model gives administrators more than an attendance record, but learners must demonstrate understanding to finish. Administrators can automate assignments, organize learners into groups, track online and offline training, and create custom reports. Audit trails and certificates that can include a company logo support documentation needs.

Course access and compatibility

Courses can be launched on mobile devices and tablets, including iPhone, Android, and Windows devices, with progress tracking and certificates retained. SafetySkills lists Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows platforms. The catalog includes multiple languages, although not every course is offered in every language.

SCORM and AICC compliance makes the courseware compatible with most leading learning management systems, so organizations with an existing LMS can use the content without relying solely on Direct. Custom content is also supported. OSHA-authorized courses are a notable exception to the standard catalog: they are distributed through the University of South Florida and cost extra per learner.

Pricing

SafetySkills Direct has custom pricing and is billed per credit. Creating an account is free, and SafetySkills offers one free course each month; charges apply when courses are assigned. Credit use varies by course and learner count, so organizations should account for both factors when estimating assignment costs. OSHA-authorized courses carry an additional per-learner fee outside the standard catalog. A free trial is available.

Direct includes the content library, custom content, automated assignments, certificates, SCORM support, and both online and offline training delivery. The free access is useful for exploring the service, but it is not a fixed-price allowance for assigning a broader course program: assignment charges are credit-based.

Platforms

SafetySkills lists Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows support. Its courses can also be launched on mobile devices and tablets, including iPhone, Android, and Windows devices, while retaining progress and certificates.

Who it's for

SafetySkills is a strong fit for organizations that need a broad EHS and emergency-response catalog, competency-based completion, and centralized assignment and reporting tools. It also suits teams that already use an LMS and want SCORM- or AICC-compliant courseware. Organizations seeking predictable per-seat pricing, or requiring specific courses in a particular language, should weigh the credit model and variable language coverage before committing.

Pros and cons

Pros: A wide-ranging catalog covers varied topics and industries, while competency checks require learners to demonstrate understanding.
Pros: Direct combines automated assignments, learner groups, online and offline tracking, custom reports, audit trails, and branded certificates.
Pros: Free account creation and one free course each month provide a way to begin without an upfront account fee.
Cons: Assignment charges depend on credits, course, and learner count, which makes total cost less straightforward to forecast.
Cons: OSHA-authorized courses cost extra per learner, and not every course is available in every catalog language.

Alternatives

Compliance Training Software is a useful category starting point for comparing compliance-focused options. Consider Workhub if a freemium service with a published Standard price of 3.00 USD per month per user is a better fit; its minimum is three users, and SMS notifications are available only in Canada and the USA. ComplyTrain may suit a very small team that can work within its free plan's one-user limit and caps of five QMS/IMS documents, one compliance standard, and one knowledge base; its Professional plan is 500.00 EUR per month.

Enabler is another freemium option. Choose Traliant if a paid plan with a listed Plus price of 3.99 USD per year and HRIS integrations, analytics, legal support, a course customizer, classroom mode, and API access better matches the need. 5Mins.ai may be preferable for teams wanting a yearly-billed plan starting at 20 users with 10 compliance courses of choice and five AI videos included; its Essentials plan is 200.00 GBP per month.

Emtrain offers paid per-learner annual plans, including Basic at 50.00 USD per year with a 100-user minimum and volume pricing above 500 learners. Wranx is a paid option with a Growth plan for up to 250 active users and advanced question formats. LRN Catalyst is another paid option, with personalized quotes by request and a demo offered.

Verdict

Choose SafetySkills if your organization needs a broad safety training catalog together with assignment, competency-check, and completion-tracking tools, or if its compliant courseware fits an existing LMS. Its free entry point and monthly free course are useful for getting started, but credit-based assignment costs and separate OSHA-authorized course fees make it a weaker fit for buyers who need predictable, all-in pricing.
