In their own words
ShadowSecurityScanner
ShadowSecurityScanner is a free, open-source desktop tool for penetration testing and network vulnerability scanning on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It scans network hosts, servers, web applications, and network appliances using port checks, service and operating-system fingerprinting, and thousands of active security tests. Findings receive FIRST.org EPSS scores and are checked against the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Scan comparisons identify findings that are new, regressed, or resolved. Reports can be exported as PDF, HTML, SARIF, XML, or CSV, with SARIF described as suitable for GitHub code scanning. A signed update feed refreshes the audit catalog with daily CISA KEV updates, Nuclei, and curated advisories. The application runs locally, stores its database in the user profile, and has no cloud component or telemetry. It is distributed as one self-contained app, without agents or a database server. Listed requirements include Windows 10/11, macOS 11 or later on Apple Silicon, and Linux x64 or ARM64. Use is limited to authorized testing; denial-of-service tests are excluded.
Vicarius vRx
Vicarius vRx combines vulnerability management with patch management, patchless protection, and scripting to remediate security findings. It prioritizes vulnerabilities using exploitability and environment context, and discovers endpoints, servers, network devices, IoT, and containers through agent-based or agentless methods. The platform advertises automated patch deployment across more than 20,000 third-party applications and operating systems. When a patch is unavailable, vShield offers in-memory protection for vulnerable applications, including legacy and end-of-life systems. vScript runs custom, community, and AI-generated PowerShell, Bash, or Batch scripts across Windows, macOS, and Linux. vRx can ingest findings from connected scanners and EDR platforms, route suggested actions for approval, and revalidate fixes after execution. It maps findings and remediation to frameworks including HIPAA, PCI DSS, Cyber Essentials, and more than 100 CIS Benchmarks. Basic is listed at $4 a month and Essential at $5 a month, billed per asset; each covers 100 workstations and servers. Both list a 14-day free trial. Custom pricing is scope-based and not listed.
