Overview

TreeSize is a Windows storage analyzer for tracing space use across files and folders. It is best suited to people who need to investigate more than a single local drive, especially IT professionals and consultants. Its range of scan targets and reporting options is a strength; the main caveats are Windows-only desktop support and restrictions on the free edition.

All editions operate on-premise, and JAM Software says scan data stays on the computer or site and is not shared with third parties. That makes TreeSize a reasonable fit where keeping storage analysis local matters. For other options in the category, see Disk Space Analyzers.

Key features

Scan and understand storage

TreeSize analyzes local drives, network shares, cloud storage, USB drives, SD cards, and external hard drives. Treemaps show how storage is divided among items, while file-type breakdowns help identify which kinds of files account for usage. That combination is useful when a folder inventory alone does not make the source of a space problem clear. Listed integrations include SharePoint, Google Drive, Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Outlook, Linux via SSH, and mobile MTP/WebDAV.

Reports, automation, and cleanup

Scan results can be exported to PDF, Excel, CSV, HTML, and SQLite, depending on edition. Professional adds custom PDF, Excel, and HTML exports, command-line parameters, task scheduling, scheduled scans, and automated reporting. These features make it the stronger choice for recurring storage reviews; they are more than a casual user may need.

TreeSize can delete, move, bulk-rename, and archive files, as well as find duplicates and deduplicate them. These actions turn analysis into a route to reclaiming space, but users should choose carefully before making bulk changes.

Pricing

TreeSize uses a freemium model. The Free edition is free, but is limited to private, non-commercial use on Windows desktop systems and cannot be used on Windows Servers. It is suitable for personal investigation, not workplace or server analysis.

Personal is billed annually at 20.40 € per user and has a 14-day free trial. It adds a largest-files filter, duplicate-file search and deduplication, and comparison of disk usage over time. It is aimed at advanced users, smaller businesses, and freelancers, though its annual per-user billing is less suited to occasional use than a one-off purchase.

Professional is billed annually from 40.80 € per user, with a 14-day free trial. It includes disk-space analysis, duplicate and large-file finding, command-line and task-scheduler options, and custom PDF, Excel, and HTML exports. It is the appropriate tier for IT professionals managing storage in-house, particularly where Windows server scans or automated reporting matter. Unlimited user licenses are available with certain Professional plans.

The Consultant License is billed annually at 240.00 € per user and includes use across multiple clients, portable use, and reusable reporting and automation. Its client coverage makes it a better match for service providers than a Personal or standard Professional license.

SpaceObServer Enterprise is billed annually at 504.00 € per instance and offers a 45-day free trial. It is intended for businesses managing large or distributed networks. The per-instance basis differs from the per-user plans, so organizations should match the licensing unit to their deployment.

Platforms

The listed desktop editions run on Windows Desktop. Professional supports scanning Windows servers, while Free cannot be used on Windows Servers. TreeSize can reach network and cloud storage targets, but those capabilities do not change its Windows desktop platform requirement.

Who it's for

TreeSize is a strong fit for Windows users who need to locate large files, understand storage by file type, or produce reports from multiple storage targets. Personal covers more advanced individual and smaller-business needs; Professional is better for IT teams that need server scanning and repeatable reporting; the Consultant License addresses work across clients. It is not the right choice for a Mac- or Linux-desktop environment, and the Free edition is not a commercial-use workaround.

Pros and cons

Pros: Scans local, removable, network, and cloud storage, giving users several ways to investigate space use.
Pros: Treemap and file-type views help explain usage from different angles.
Pros: Professional combines server scanning, scheduled work, and automated reporting for recurring IT tasks.
Pros: On-premise operation and stated non-sharing of data suit organizations that want scans kept local.
Cons: The desktop lineup runs on Windows only, excluding Mac and Linux desktop users.
Cons: Free is restricted to private, non-commercial desktop use and cannot scan Windows Servers.
Cons: Paid editions are organized around annual per-user or per-instance billing, except for Personal's perpetual option.

Alternatives

WizTree is worth considering if macOS support matters; it also has a free plan, while its listed Individual Supporter Code is 25.00 USD per month and is a perpetual personal-use license.

FolderSizes is another Windows freemium option. Its Personal Edition license is 30.00 USD per once for personal and home-network use, but is unavailable to organizations and comes with lower-priority support.

SizeTrend is a Windows freemium alternative whose free tier keeps core local-analysis features free, including drive and folder scans, cleanup and storage recommendations, and file, content, and duplicate-finding functions.

SpaceMonger is a paid Windows alternative with a free trial.

Disk Analyzer Pro offers a free personal edition for local-drive usage reports, deleting unwanted files and folders, and duplicate-file reports; it runs on macOS and Windows.

StorageRadar is a macOS freemium alternative with deep scanning, treemap and Sunburst views, and preview access across several storage tools in its free tier.

Drive Atlas supports Linux and Windows and offers a free tier for the first two drives with all features and no card or timer; its listed paid license is 20.00 USD per month, billed as a one-time purchase.

DiskAtlas is a macOS option with a free Community Edition featuring a GPU treemap, scans of the full Mac, Home, or chosen folders, Finder, QuickLook, and Terminal reveal, and instant ⌘F search.

Verdict

Choose TreeSize if you work on Windows and need storage analysis that can scale from personal scans to server-aware, automated reporting, with scan data kept on-premise. Look elsewhere if you need a non-Windows desktop app or commercial use without moving beyond the Free edition.
