Overview

SWC compiles modern JavaScript and TypeScript into code intended for major browsers, and its core API parses ECMAScript, TypeScript, and Flow. The project names Next.js, Parcel, and Deno among tools that use it, and lists Vercel, ByteDance, Tencent, Shopify, and Trip.com among its users. That ecosystem is a useful signal for teams evaluating integration, while the documentation’s description of @swc/core as mainly useful to build-tool authors makes clear that SWC is more naturally a tooling foundation than a turnkey development environment.

SWC states that it is 20x faster than Babel on a single thread and 70x faster on four cores. That makes throughput a central part of its appeal, though the right choice still depends on whether its transforms and integrations fit a project’s pipeline.

Key features

Compilation and targets: SWC is intended to support ECMAScript features, stage 3 proposals, and preset-env transforms, including bugfix transforms. Browserslist-compatible queries or minimum environment versions let teams target browsers, iOS, Android, Node, and Electron. This flexibility helps when one codebase must serve different runtimes.
Transforms and plugins: Minification, WebAssembly transforms, and custom plugins extend its role beyond syntax compilation. Teams can use it for more of a transform pipeline, but the documentation does not make it a substitute for every build tool.
Build integrations: Integrations include webpack, Rspack, and Jest. The @swc/jest package can replace Jest’s default JavaScript-based ts-jest runner with a Rust implementation, making it relevant to test pipelines as well as builds.
Browser and distribution options: @swc/wasm-web can synchronously transform code in a browser through WebAssembly. SWC can be installed using prebuilt binaries or built from source; packages and setup guidance cover npm, Yarn, pnpm, Bun, and Deno. The range is useful across different development setups, though building from source entails a different setup path from using a prebuilt package.
Polyfills: SWC warns that its polyfill usage mode is less efficient than Babel for certain dynamically computed property expressions. Projects that rely on those expressions should weigh that limitation before switching.
Bundling: SWC’s bundling feature is scheduled to be dropped in v2, and the project recommends SWC-based bundlers such as Parcel 2, Turbopack, Rspack, and fe-farm. Use SWC for compilation and transforms if useful, but do not make its own bundler the foundation of a pipeline expected to continue through v2.

Pricing

SWC is free: the SWC plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is an open-source Rust-based developer toolchain. There is no free trial because the plan is already free, and the pricing model has no paid tier described. This makes it a practical option for individual developers and teams that can adopt its tooling without a commercial software budget.

The plan includes TypeScript support, code splitting, tree shaking, source maps, and a plugin API. Those capabilities make the free plan substantial for compilation and build workflows; the important trade-off is not a paid-plan feature gap but the bundler’s planned removal in v2 and the polyfill caveat for some code patterns.

Platforms

SWC lists Android, API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Its package-manager guidance spans npm, Yarn, pnpm, Bun, and Deno, and the browser-side WebAssembly module offers a distinct way to transform code in web contexts. Browser and runtime targeting can be configured for environments including browsers, iOS, Android, Node, and Electron.

Who it's for

SWC suits build-tool authors, JavaScript infrastructure teams, and developers whose framework or test setup already integrates it. Teams targeting multiple runtimes can benefit from its target configuration, while those seeking a fast compiler with a plugin API can use it without paying for a plan.

It is less compelling as a standalone answer for teams that need a stable bundled-and-compiled pipeline from one product, given the announced v2 bundler removal. Developers using dynamically computed property expressions in polyfill-heavy code should also compare its behavior with Babel before changing pipelines. SWC describes itself as community-driven and points users to GitHub Discussions and Discord for discussion.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free access, broad JavaScript and TypeScript parsing, configurable runtime targets, and integrations with webpack, Rspack, and Jest make SWC adaptable to established workflows.
Pros: Its stated speed comparisons with Babel give performance-focused teams a reason to evaluate it, while browser-based WebAssembly transforms and several package-manager options broaden how it can be adopted.
Cons: The bundler is slated for removal in v2, so teams should plan to use a separate SWC-based bundler rather than depend on SWC bundling long term.
Cons: Its documented polyfill mode is less efficient than Babel for certain dynamically computed property expressions, which may matter in codebases using those patterns.
Cons: The core API is framed mainly for build-tool authors, so developers wanting a more turnkey application workflow may prefer a tool aligned with that need.

Alternatives

Babel is the direct alternative to consider if SWC’s polyfill behavior for certain dynamically computed property expressions is a concern. Babel is also free, with no paid tiers or usage limits stated.

Google Web Toolkit, Transcrypt, ClojureScript, Kotlin/JS, Scala.js, Cython, and CoffeeScript are other free alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Choose SWC if you need a free, fast JavaScript and TypeScript compiler that fits into a build or test workflow, especially one already connected to its integrations. Its configurable targets and transform support are strong reasons to adopt it; look elsewhere for bundling you expect SWC itself to maintain through v2, or if your polyfill patterns run into its documented inefficiency.
