Sloga vs Taverns

Sloga is a free chat app for gaming communities, with servers, channels, roles, voice, video, and screen sharing. Communities can also use events, threads, forums, announcement channels, and Discover listings, while automatic real-time translation is available in every channel. Messages and attachments support end-to-end encryption; calls are encrypted in the Windows, Linux, and Android apps, but not yet in the Mac app. Call transcription runs on the user's device on Windows, Android, and the web, with Linux support forthcoming. Discord server templates can be imported to recreate categories, channels, roles, and permissions without linking a Discord account. Attachments can reach 5GB, though files over 20MB are deleted 24 hours after sending. Voice servers are listed in the United States, São Paulo, and Singapore; the app selects the fastest region unless a server owner pins one. Watch parties work with YouTube and Jellyfin, synchronizing playback while each participant uses their own copy. Sloga has browser, Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android apps; iOS is listed as coming soon. Its web and mobile clients, server, and shared client libraries are AGPL-3.0, while desktop encryption components remain private. The service is hosted and costs nothing, with no subscription required.

Taverns is a hosted community platform for gaming and hobby groups, with text and voice halls, forums, events, roles, and moderation tools. People can join through a browser without installing anything, and the service also supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. The Free plan costs nothing and includes an account, Tavern creation, community membership, chat, voice, and community tools; optional extras use Prisma. There is no free trial. Members can upload files up to 2 GB for free, while each Tavern supports 700 custom emoji and 1,000 stickers without a subscription or boosts. Stage halls synchronize video playback for watch parties using YouTube, TikTok, X posts, Vimeo, Twitch clips, and video files. The homepage describes screen sharing at 1080p and 60 fps. Voice, video, and screen-sharing calls are end-to-end encrypted, except when a voice hall streams to or from a third party that does not support that encryption. Taverns is operated by MEKASMITH Co., Ltd., with a listed address in Tokyo, Japan.
