In their own words
Software Updater
Software Updater is a free Windows application that scans installed software, compares versions with a database, and identifies newer releases. Programs needing updates appear in a browser where users can download current versions, choose which updates to install, or skip them. The site says the catalog covers thousands of popular Windows applications, including Chrome, Firefox, Skype, iTunes, and Adobe Reader. A scheduler can run scans automatically in the background, and bulk app updates are supported. The download page lists version 1.18.1122.31 at 5.17MB for PCs running Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, or XP. The maker says updates are checked for malicious threats and that the app has no malware, adware, viruses, bundles, installers, or toolbars. Its EULA licenses one computer and limits use to non-commercial purposes. TouchStoneSoftware.com provides free support. The privacy policy says submitted personal information and non-personal details such as URLs, browser, and IP address are collected.
Ubuntu Update Manager
Ubuntu Update Manager is a free graphical frontend for apt that installs available updates and supports routine Ubuntu system upgrades. In the desktop menu it appears as Software Updater, and Ubuntu describes the package as a GNOME application for managing apt updates. It is intended for daily system upgrading as well as migration to a newer Ubuntu release.
The tool can check whether a new distribution release is available. Its development-release option can upgrade from the latest supported release to the development release. During an upgrade, it may reinstall ubuntu-desktop, change sources.list entries to updated ones, and add the default user to new groups when needed. Ubuntu says its bundled installation tools validate packages during installation to check for manipulation during download. Update Manager runs on Linux and integrates with apt. The manpage credits Michael Vogt and various contributors with its development; it also states that redistribution is permitted under the GNU General Public License and provides no warranty.
