Overview

Soundtrap is a cloud-based studio for making music and podcasts, best suited to creators who want to build projects with other people in a shared workspace. Its free account makes it approachable, but browser variability and missing mobile tools can frustrate workflows that depend on precise audio control.

Music makers get recording and editing tools, MIDI, instruments and a large loop library; podcasters can use the same studio for audio projects. Real-time collaboration, video and chat, project comments and autosave give teams a practical way to work together without separating the creative tools from the discussion.

Key features

Creation and collaboration

The studio combines vocal and mixing effects, virtual instruments, a MIDI editor, multitrack editing, noise reduction and royalty-free loops and samples. Soundtrap describes a library of up to 24,000+ loops and hundreds of presets, with new sound packs added every two weeks. That breadth gives producers plenty of material to shape a track, though free accounts get only a selection of the sounds and tools.

Paid tiers name features such as vocal tuning, Time Restore and automation; Music Production adds loops, one-shots, instruments, effects, high-quality downloads and priority mixing. These options make Soundtrap more than a basic loop editor, but the plans’ prices are custom pricing, so buyers cannot readily compare their cost from the plan names alone.

Projects support real-time collaboration through video and chat, with comments and autosave. That is a meaningful advantage for remote co-writing and shared production; the cloud-based workflow is less compelling for anyone who needs dependable access to every audio feature in every environment.

Education

Soundtrap for Education is aimed at students and teachers creating audio projects across subjects and ability levels. It integrates with Noteflight, Flat.io, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Canvas, Schoology and MusicFirst. The service uses a walled garden that limits student collaboration to their account environment and groups, and Soundtrap says it is designed to comply with COPPA, GDPR and FERPA standards and supports CIPA certification.

Education plans have a 50-seat minimum and are billed annually, with Classroom, School and District options for different institutional needs. The School plan includes chat and email support; the District plan adds an account manager and setup and professional development support for accounts with 400 or more seats. Educators can try Education for 30 days without providing payment details upfront, but the minimum seat count makes it a school purchase rather than a casual classroom subscription.

Pricing

Soundtrap uses a freemium model. Soundtrap Basic is free and includes a free account with limited loops and instruments. Users can create and save projects and access a selection of free loops, instruments, drum kits and studio tools, while some sounds and features require a paid plan. It is a sensible starting point for experimentation, but the caps matter once a project depends on a broader sound palette or professional features.

Sound Starter, Production & Vocals, Music Production and Vocals & Songwriting have custom pricing. Sound Starter highlights vocal tuning, Time Restore and automation; Production & Vocals combines Sound Starter, Music Production and Vocals & Songwriting; Music Production focuses on sounds, effects, high-quality downloads and priority mixing; Vocals & Songwriting adds vocal tools, presets, songwriting features, podcast creation and interactive transcripts. Choose by workflow rather than assuming one paid tier includes every capability: the plan descriptions distinguish their bundles, and no paid tier has a published price here.

Soundtrap for Education is an annual subscription with custom pricing that varies by Classroom, School or District plan. Its 50-seat minimum and 30-day no-card trial are the key terms for schools assessing a rollout.

Platforms

Soundtrap supports web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android; its platform listing also includes Linux. Current Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari are supported, with Chrome or Microsoft Edge Chromium recommended. Some audio features may not work fully in every browser and operating system, and recording can have higher latency, so browser choice matters for recording-sensitive work.

iOS and Android apps extend access to mobile, but automation and MIDI input are among the features unavailable there. Mobile is therefore useful for working on projects away from a computer, not a complete substitute when a session depends on those tools.

Who it's for

Soundtrap is a strong fit for collaborators who want music or podcast projects, shared comments and live communication in one cloud workspace, and for schools seeking student audio creation with classroom integrations and account controls. It is a weaker fit for producers who require consistent low-latency recording or mobile access to automation and MIDI input. Free users can explore the studio, but limited loops and instruments make it a trial of the workflow rather than an unrestricted production setup.

Pros and cons

Pros: Music and podcast creation share a studio with multitrack editing, MIDI, noise reduction, vocal and mixing tools.
Pros: Real-time collaboration, video, chat, comments and autosave support a genuinely shared project workflow.
Pros: Education integrations and student account controls suit structured classroom projects; School and larger District plans include dedicated support.
Cons: The free account limits loops and instruments, while some sounds and features sit behind paid plans.
Cons: Browser and operating-system differences can affect audio features and recording latency.
Cons: Mobile lacks automation and MIDI input, and Education requires at least 50 seats.
Cons: Paid plan pricing is custom, making direct budget comparison difficult.

Alternatives

For notation-led classroom work, Flat may suit better: its free Basic plan has core notation features, real-time collaboration and a 15-score limit. For file handoffs and review, Pibox offers a free tier for two users, unlimited guests, two projects and 1 Gb storage. Amped Studio is another browser-based music option, with a Starter plan capped at five projects and 16 tracks and a Premium plan at 6.99 USD per month.

For remote jamming, consider JackTrip, which describes its software as free and open source and lets studios host it on their own servers for free. Sessionwire may suit teams prioritizing session connections and guest audio/video/file transfer: its free tier includes unlimited connections, SessionChat and a plugin suite. Sound Credit is a project-administration alternative with a free Essential plan, though its track allowance is described differently across its plan and FAQ. For free collaboration over networked music sessions, compare Jamulus or SonoBus.

Browse Music Collaboration Software for more shared-workspace options, or Audio Editing Software for other editing tools.

Verdict

Choose Soundtrap if you want a cloud studio that brings music or podcast creation together with live collaboration, or if your school needs an education-focused audio workspace. Its free tier is a useful entry point, but limited content, custom-priced paid plans, browser-dependent audio behavior and reduced mobile controls are real trade-offs. Look elsewhere if precise recording conditions, mobile automation or transparent paid pricing are central to your decision.
