Overview

Flow can put text wherever a cursor can type, from email and messaging apps to terminals, code editors, and AI tools. It supports more than 100 languages and can detect the language being spoken. Rather than transcribing every hesitation verbatim, it can remove filler words, add punctuation, format writing, and handle corrections and repetition. Custom vocabulary and voice commands give frequent users more ways to shape the result.

Wispr claims Flow works at four times the speed of typing, comparing 220 words per minute with 45 for keyboard typing. That is the maker’s comparison, not a guarantee of an individual user’s pace. Flow processes dictation in the cloud and does not work offline, making it a poor fit where connectivity or local processing is essential.

Key features

Dictation across apps: Flow works wherever the cursor can type, so users can keep dictating in their existing tools instead of moving text between a dedicated editor and other apps.
Speech cleanup: Filler removal, punctuation, formatting, and handling of corrections can reduce the editing needed after speaking. Users who need verbatim transcription should weigh that against Flow’s rewriting behavior.
Language support: More than 100 languages, automatic language detection, and custom vocabulary make Flow suitable for multilingual writing and specialized terms.
Notetaker: Meeting notes, speaker identification, questions across meetings, and MCP access for AI tools extend the product beyond dictation. Notetaker currently runs on Mac and Windows; mobile support is planned.
Privacy and security: Users can control whether their data is used to improve Flow, manage sharing preferences, and delete stored data. Wispr states that it is certified for SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, and ISO 27001. These controls do not change the fact that dictation is cloud-processed.
Audio advice: Wispr recommends against AirPods and other Bluetooth earbuds because they can reduce dictation accuracy, a notable caveat for people who rely on wireless headsets.

Pricing

Flow has a free tier and individual and team paid plans. The free plan is free and is aimed at individuals; it allows 2,000 words per week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile, plus a weekly Notetaker limit. Those caps make it useful for trying the workflow or occasional dictation, but restrictive for regular use.

Pro costs $15.00 USD per month on monthly billing, or $12.00 USD per year as listed for the annual plan, billed at $12 per user per month with a 20% discount. Both are for individuals and teams; Pro includes unlimited dictations. The lower-cost free tier gives up unlimited use.

Growth adds basic admin controls. Growth Annual is $18.00 USD per year, billed at $18 per user per month with a 20% discount; Growth Monthly is $23.00 USD per month. The Growth - Dictation only plan is $23.00 USD per month and includes unlimited dictation. Growth - Dictation + Notetaker costs $33.00 USD per month and includes unlimited dictation and unlimited Notetaker access. Team features include shared dictionaries and snippets, shared workspaces, centralized billing, and user management. Growth and Enterprise add SSO, HIPAA enforcement, usage reporting, provisioning, audit logs, and managed deployment, making Growth more relevant to teams that need administration than to solo users.

Enterprise has custom pricing and is available annually. It includes advanced security, SCIM provisioning, audit logs, managed deployment, dedicated support with SLAs, and custom contract terms. Plans provide standard, priority, or premium support; Enterprise is the option with dedicated support and SLAs.

Platforms

Flow runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android. Notetaker is currently limited to Mac and Windows. Because dictation is cloud-based and offline use is unavailable, Flow depends on internet access. Wispr is based in San Francisco, California.

Who it's for

Flow is a strong fit for people who dictate into several apps, work across supported languages, or want speech turned into cleaned-up writing rather than raw transcripts. Pro suits individuals or teams that need unlimited dictation; Growth is better for teams that want shared resources and administrative controls. The free plan is best for light use. Look elsewhere if offline dictation, mobile Notetaker, or a recommendation for Bluetooth-earbud use is essential.

Pros and cons

Pros: Dictation works across apps, with cleanup, custom vocabulary, voice commands, and support for more than 100 languages.
Pros: Free access spans desktop and mobile, while paid Pro removes dictation limits.
Pros: Team plans provide shared dictionaries and workspaces, with advanced administration available on Growth and Enterprise.
Cons: Free users face separate weekly word caps on desktop and mobile, plus a weekly Notetaker limit.
Cons: Cloud processing rules out offline dictation, and the maker warns that Bluetooth earbuds may reduce accuracy.
Cons: Notetaker is not yet available on mobile.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see dictation software. Superwhisper is another freemium option across Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows, with free voice-to-text in any app and meeting recording and transcription. Choose Dictanote if browser-based notes suit you better: its free plan allows up to 50 notes in one notebook and 60 minutes of dictation a day, across more platforms including Linux and web.

WakaScribe offers a free local plan with unlimited words and no time limit, making it worth considering for users who prioritize those terms. Voice In is a freemium dictation option for Linux, Mac, and Windows, with 60 minutes per day on its free plan. Braina offers a free Lite plan for one Windows PC and a Pro plan listed at $99.00 USD per year for one Windows PC.

Aqua Voice starts with 1,000 free words and has a Pro plan at $8.00 USD per month billed annually. Serenade is a free, open-source option for Linux, Mac, and Windows. Dragon Professional is a paid Windows option with purchase details by request.

Verdict

Choose Wispr Flow if you want cross-app dictation that cleans up speech, supports many languages, and can scale from individual use to team administration. Its main trade-offs are cloud-only processing, capped free usage, and a desktop-only Notetaker. If offline use or local dictation is decisive, WakaScribe’s free local plan is a more natural place to look; if you need mobile meeting notes, Flow is not ready for that role.
