A cover song is a new recording of an existing song. An AI cover usually keeps the song’s composition and backing track while replacing or transforming the vocal performance with a synthetic or cloned voice. That makes it different from generating an original song: you must consider the rights in the underlying song, the recording you upload, and the voice you imitate.
What Makes An AI Cover A Cover Song?
The recognizable melody, lyrics, harmony, or arrangement comes from an existing song. The AI system may separate vocals, convert a recorded singer into another voice, or generate a new vocal performance over an instrumental. A useful cover workflow therefore needs control over vocal timing, pitch, key, and the balance between the replacement vocal and the backing track.

Which Rights And Consent Questions Matter?
- Underlying song: The composition and lyrics belong to their rights holders. An AI voice does not remove those rights.
- Source recording: Upload only audio or video you are allowed to use. Some services explicitly make users responsible for uploaded songs.
- Voice identity: Clone or imitate a real singer only with that person’s authorization. A disclaimer does not replace consent.
- Platform terms: Commercial permissions differ. - Confirm the song and recording rights. Record or obtain an instrumental you are permitted to use, and keep evidence of permission for any supplied voice.
- Prepare the source. Trim silence, use a clean vocal or full mix, and stay within the selected tool’s file-size and duration limits.
- Choose the voice deliberately. Use a built-in voice, your own voice model, or a documented authorized reference voice. Do not label an imitation as the real artist.
- Set musical constraints. Specify the key, tempo, vocal range, language, and whether you want a solo, duet, or chorus result when those controls are available.
- Preview and check the result. Listen for altered lyrics, timing errors, clipped consonants, artifacts, and a backing track that masks the vocal.
- Export and label it. Keep the original project files, identify the cover and AI voice use in the description or credits, and follow the destination platform’s current rules.
